Saw this angelfish at local fish store and thought it was beautiful but first I need to identify it. It looks like a multicolor but the LFS labels it as corral beauty. Can anyone identify it?

On my phone it looks like some variety of Pygmy angelfish. Some of these are reef safe. I’d be tempted to buy it because I don’t recognize it. Is it rare?

Looked rare to me and was very tempted to buy it for $40 but was worried that it wasn’t reef safe.

From the photos my money would be on C. bispinosa x vorliki. followed by aberrant individuals from either parentage Coral beauty or Half Black, albinism or some other color issue. Followed by 3rd probability C. bispinosa x multicolor Lack of forehead ornamentation that is common in aberrant and hybrids of C. Multicolor suggest to this is less likely than C. vorliki. But hard to say, especially seeing as these all live in overlapping areas so it would be hard to narrow down from geography.

So in a nut shell, it’s really rare?

Rare doesnt mean 'valuable'. Its probably as others have said a hybrid - its impossible say what it will look like in a year (i.e how do we know its a pygmy angel vs a small version of a larger one. Whether rare or not - 40$ is a good price - but it may not be attractive in a couple years. I agree with @pcon

Well, I have no intention to buy it so if you live in central Illinois, get there fast.
