Hello: can any one tell me what this soft purple growth is. It is a 1/4 inch or so at its thickest. It’s lit up in the photo. Is it harmful/cause cyano?

Thank you.

The beginning of cyano. Are you able to blow it away with a turkey baster? If so , it is red slime algae and stage into cyano. Check phosphates as a culprit and lower feeding amounts and siphon the matter when doing water changes

No, this does not blow away. It's a thick soft growth - like a fat tumor beginning take over the rock. Any other ideas? I don't know whether to leave it in the tank or take it out.

Thanks - but no, it does not blow away. It's attached to the rock like a thick soft tumor and growing. Any other ideas? I don't know whether to leave it in or take it out of the tank.

Does it brush off with a toothbrush?

Can't really tell from picture, but If it doesn't blow off or come off easy with a toothbrush, then probably a sponge. I would leave it.

Yes, and I might not be looking at what the OP is trying to point out. I'm looking at the purple on the LR below some type of mass such as a softy?

thanks - interesting - didn't think of that and I have no idea about sponges.

Is a sponge good, bad or indifferent to the tank?

Now that I can see this on a 32" computer screen, it is sponge and is good/harmless.

Some sponges can take over a tank.. i have a tubing kind of white.clear sponge and its allll over my rocks..
