UNIDENTIFIED SOUND

If it is a pistol, I wouldn't worry about it. They make a mess with your sand but other than that they're cool to watch. (if you can ever find it :))

Iv had a pistol in my tank since April 2016 and iv never seen him. Every night I hear it snapping away but no clue as to were it hides
I just dont understand how it got in there. It had to have hitch with the recent frags. It defenately was not in there before. Thats a fact! But it should of poped off in my dips and i inpect the corals. Did not see any inverts on the coral. There were plenty dead one in my dip containers. Copes, worm, ect. Its just the coral mounted on a plug no rock rubble. He must be tiny. Loud snap though! Thats the only way it could have got it was the frags two weeks ago.

Agreed but i hope its not a mantis. I had a tiger pistol paired with a goby and i witnessed him snatch my firefish and drag him in his hole.

Mine make sound like that too. I never see them, but I purposely have them in there. Strange it survived all that. Guess "life will find a way".

My resolution ideas:
A) buy a goby to pair with and see where he goes.
B) wait untill whatever it is gets bigger and starts eating my inverts or fish and investigate then.

At last you can do a trap with a plastic bottle and a piece of frozen shrimp
If its a mantis be sure it will go there
Thanks, great idea. Im usually ingenious like that but your sinister plan has foiled me once again! Ill try one of those short water bottles and stick in the cave toward the back where i hear it. Most likely my pepermint shrimp will get in there.

I'm new so not sure how to follow but this sounds pretty interesting and I'm curious what it turns out to be. Good luck on the trap. Will you post pics if you catch anything?

Pistol shrimp

Most likely some kind of invert, but do you have a pair of Banggai Cardinals in the tank? Mine make a sound like something tapping the glass but it is part of their mating noise.

No cardinals.

Im starting to see some tunnels in the sand under the live rock. No trails from rock to rock though like pistol shimps make.

Most Mantis shrimp aren't that shy. If you have one you'll know it pretty quick.
I did a stake out with a low blue light flashlight last night for an hour when the lights went out. I could hear the snaping but cant find anything. I found all 4 pepermint shrimp.

Ill set a trap some time next week. If its a mantis i want him out! If its a pistol ill probly keep him. And ya for me to get free pistol shrimp!

I have some tiny pistols from Tampa Bay Saltwater rock. They don't dig and the are probably just half an inch long and I've only seen one twice in 6 months. But they make a racket with their popping. Could be the same thing.

So the trap is not working. Im seeing tunnels in the sand under the rock and hermit crab shell block holes.

Hmmm could be.
