Purchased a little blue/green ricordea from ly LFS a few weeks ago. Was pretty happy as it's a pretty little thing, but the rock started growing a strange pinkish frill on it. Wasn't sure what it could be, but it seemed fairly static and wasn't harming anything, so I just left it alone.

Then tonight as I'm feeding I see the rock spontaneously raise out of the sand bed about 1/2 inch. It isn't a rock, it's some kind of random bivalve!!

I have no idea what it could be, but the pink appears to be protruding from its mantle. Anyone recognize it or have any ideas>

Oh geez that awesome! I haven't seen that before.
The shell is kinda flat?

Yeah, pretty flat, so I'm thinking that it's not photosynthetic. It's a little bigger than a quarter and has a layered shell, as you can probably see in the pic.

Yup, Im guessing its an Atlantic oyster of some kind.
Those are Atlantic Ricordia?

Yup, the one that's on it was a Mexican blue ricordea according to the forms. I actually work at the shop that I bought if from, so I was able to get full info.

JEALOUS! Im that guy who comes in looking for that kinda stuff.
A solid ID is REALLY though purely because theres soo many kinds. Youll have to look closer at the mouth part and compare it to others just to verify clam oyster or mussel, then hop someone has a picture of it.
Great find!

Topic update: little guy is doing fine, but can't quite say the same for the ricordea on its shell. The clam has taken to doing a bit of walking at night, occasionally putting the poor ricordea in direct lighting and even once putting it upside-down in the sand =P
