I had a 20 Long frag tank with predominately neon green hammers.

Since it was a frag tank, I didn't pay much attention to algae. While on vacation the algae blocked up the powerhead and filter and, without flow, killed everything in the tank.

Being a professional procrastinator, today I started to clean out the tank. And what do I find....two of the dead heads of coral have multiple small little green things growing out of them. No idea what they are.

Could they be mini hammers coming back? Anyone have any ideas?

Yes is babies. By the way - it looks like cyanobacteria - not algae.

Sincerely Lasse

Lasse, believe me, it was algae that clogged up the powerhead and filter. Once all the death occurred, the cyano overgrew the dead coral heads.

Thanks all for the replies. I've never seen mini-hammers. This was originally a colony in my tank of (a guess) 40 to 50 full sized heads. When I broke down the tank, trying to remove this colony was a breakdown as well. Ended up with multiple mini colonies of this hammer. Was planning on selling/giving away....but that's now not going to happen. Although this regrowth....who knows. I've got two of these that "survived" and growing these mini-heads. In another tank, I have one full size hammer with two heads. Enough for the new tank I'm putting up. These really grew like a weed in my tank.

I'd call 'em Walking Dead Hammers!

So what do you think....a common coral with a fancy name....$1000 per head? We'll split the profits!
