I found a little orange crab last night on my rock when I was exploring with the lights out. I've never seen this guy before, despite having this rock since April of 2018 and regularly exploring at night to see all the hitchhikers. This guy is probably about the width of a penny, maybe a nickel (~20 mm). It's hard to tell for sure, as soon as I shine light on the guy I have about 2 seconds before he retreats into his cave. The coloration in this photo is pretty accurate. He's mostly bright orange and speckled with white.

This is rock from KP Aquatics and came straight from the ocean, so this little guy could probably be anything. I've done a bit of searching on the Internet and R2R, but haven't found anything like this. Does anybody have any ideas what he could be? Thanks!

I suppose that's possible. If I Google Xanthid crab, this little guy looks like some of the pictures. He's definitely not exactly like any of them though. The tips of the claws are white as opposed to black, which seems to be what most Xanthid crabs have. He does look like some of the more orange crabs that come up in the Xanthid search results, but most of them aren't hairy/furry, and this guy definitely is.

I think I'll try to set up a bottle or cup trap to catch this guy either way.

Lophozozymus crab. Xantchidae sp.
