Found this guy running around a few days ago, finally got a picture. Kind of has a mantis look to it (but the abdomen/telson is too curved)

And also there is a worm that is on the plug for my finger leather. It secretes some sort of silk-like substance that I think may be irritating the corals.

Any ideas? Good, bad, or ugly?

Definitely an amphipod. For the worm, it could be a peanut but doesn’t match the shape exactly. Also, this one is sessile, I thought that peanut worms were mobile (unless I’m mistaken).

You can see the silk coming off it as well.

Gammarid amphipod and if the tube of the worm hard and somewhat spiraled, vermatid snail.

If vermatid, cover end with glue and it will die.

That's a vermetid snail. They do irritate corals with their slime nets so either superglue its head opening or crush it off of the rock.

this for sure, they are not panic mode pests but they can present a problem down the road so scape it off the plug if you can

It’s funny because it makes perfect sense. I moved a leather coral to this spot a few weeks ago but it was always closed. I swapped it with another one and now that one is always closed. Thanks for the ID! I can finally stop stressing that my water quality is bad and it was just a stupid snail.

I hope that is what is causing the stress and you can quickly resolve. I don’t want to be bearer of possible bad news but I am not sure one vermetid snail would cause that much stress. I have thousands in my tank trying to get them under control and to date don’t see no problems with corals but do believe they can stress. Also I don’t have soft corals so they may not like it more. Please let us know if that resolved as always a good learning point. Also remove now before that takes over tank like many of us. Best of luck

If i were you (or if i was doing my tank over again) i would go to any length necessary to keep those f***ing vermetids out.

at first i thought they added diversity, but now the entirety of my rock looks like a freaking hedgehog. even if you don't care about the looks, they can and will poke your hand when you do maintenance. if you only see one, do yourself a favour and nip it in the bud.

Funny, something did poke me when I was cleaning my filter. So far I’ve found two, I’ll kill them when I’m doing maintenance tomorrow. I hope that’s all the problems with the coral.
