So I ended up pulling the trigger on a 25gal RS peninsula earlier this month and figured I’d post some pictures on a pretty cool unorthodox way of aquascaping for anyone that had the same idea.

Can styrofoam help create different ways to make aquascapes in saltwater like it does in freshwater ?

I’ve seen people use styrofoam and expanding foam in a bottle for aquarium backgrounds for fresh water but wanted to tweak it for saltwater .

I really wanted to purchase a custom aquascape, but unfortunately most cost more then I wanted to spend and would probably be impractical with dismantling it down the road or worse breaking during shipping.

This was the unboxing process of the tank

He’s got a thing for boxes . . .

So after getting it all set up I used the styrofoam that came with the tank and started building.

This is what I came up with

The main purpose for the nano was to have it as a small frag/display tank and remove the frags I currently have in my main tank .

I still wanted it to look nice to look at even if it’s just a frag tank so I came up with this design and the shelf’s would help with coral placement . The coral epoxy is pricey but compared to purchasing a frag rack holder it kind of evens out so I didn’t feel to bad about it plus I like this look more .

I used coral glue epoxy to cover the foam and it did take a while ngl but it came out really cool looking .

The only problem is that the foam will float if you don’t weight it down properly so I had to silicone it down to the glass .

This is what it currently looks like now .

The cycle starts tomorrow.

Interesting idea for sure but not my cup of tea. It looks to much like steps.

Cat is cool
My late sister was a huge sphynx lover. She adopted most of hers through sphynx open arms rescue aka soar.
Yeah It won’t be for most, I think that’s why I thought I’d post it as I haven’t seen anyone doing this it’s just to show you can doing things differently from the standard way of using regular self rock or regular rock .

& yeah this little guy is great wasn’t a fan of cats always had dogs but after my Sphynx I definitely can’t go back .

I used Styrofoam (technically Expanded Poly Styrene, as Styrofoam is a trademark name ), spray foam, and Krylon Fusion to create a faux rock wall for mine.

how long have you had it up and running and have you had any issues with it ?

This is a new setup. Only 2 months old. Still cycling. Hence the no fish yet. But, I did the same thing in a 180 gallon that I ran for 10 years with no issues.

That looks awesome! I want to do something like that but I'm a complete newbie lol. Did you use a specific spray foam or seal it with anything other than the krylon? It's a really awesome look though

Just regular ol’ Great Stuff foam from the local big box store. Used the big gap stuff to get the base of what I wanted and then the low expansion (window and door) to create any details I needed. Best part, if I didn’t like a section, I just cut it away and resprayed it. Didn’t do anything to seal it. Just sprayed Krylon Fusion.

thank you so much! I'm going to go pick some of that stuff up today and get to working on a new project
