Unscientific Skimmer Noise Poll

I used a decibel meter app on my phone and held my phone in the cabinet. I took measurements with the skimmer off and with the skimmer on. Aside from the skimmer, I have only a Varios 4 running in the cabinet.

I hope others play along! I may end up with a new skimmer based on everyone's results.
The iPhone app I used to measure the sound is NIOSH SLM.

Results (Model: dB with skimmer running, dB without skimmer running):

Reef Octopus Classic 150 SSS: 65dB with, 53dB without
Reef Octopus Regal 150S: 55dB with, 52dB without
Reef Octopus SRO3000int: 54dB with, 49dB without

Sounds like an interesting idea. But I don't have the app. My skimmer does make noise, but it's inside a cabinet and on a tank that makes very little other noise. LED fans are nearly silent, the overflow is dead quiet and the return pump is almost dead quiet.

There are several free apps that are easy to download, including one for iOS that’s published by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, part of the CDC.

I have a SRO3000int and with it on in my sump I get a db reading of 53-54 dB.
with the skimmer off I have 49-50db.

I don’t use a skimmer but the one I did have was a HOB and I hated it it was stupid loud and I payed almost a hundred dollars for it. I would like to brag my tank is basically silent now. The dead make more noise than it does.

I just installed a Reef Octopus Regal 150S and the difference is amazing. 52 dB without, 55 with.

I put all the results at the top of the thread. I continue to do so if anyone else replies. This was helpful in me deciding to buy a new skimmer, so thanks for the responses.
