Hello everyone,

Thinking of upgrading to a bigger aquarium. I currently have a IM 150 lagoon and want to upgrade to a wider 6ft+ tank. My current system has been running for about 2 1/2 years. Have a sand sifting starfish that I have had in there for about 1 1/2 years. My question is if I upgrade to a bigger tank, will my startfish suffer because of all new sand? I'll seed it with some from the old tank, but wont the sand sifter starve with nothing to feed on?

Thanks and happy reefing!
Justin

You can always supplement his food by hand feeding until your sand develops sufficient microfauna to sustain him.

seeding with old sand can kill your fish, it's a dangerous method

if you want 100% safety do what the fifty page tank transfer thread shows, it's eight years with no fish kills.

you would simply run the safe tank transfer method, xfer 0% unrinsed sand to avoid a fish kill risk, then buy new pods to add to the tank or simply slip the starfish food up under him. he was eating tank waste castings and leftover food more than he was eating things in the sandbed, that's a misnomer. anyone can pick up a handful of reef sandbed sand and look at it, nothing is moving or wiggling. it's a lump of sand and mud waste.

page one has some fish kills by not using the method. all other pages are safe tank transfers by using the tap water rinse method on the incoming sand.
