It's much cheaper in the long run to buy your own RO/DI unit as opposed to having to buy the water. The upfront costs hurt a little initially but the long term positives outweigh it ten fold.

I learned a LONGLONG LONG time ago that RO water is one of the biggest keys. and yes, buying your own system is the way to go. you can get into one for $100

Completely agree. I've gotten into the hobby twice now, and both times, literally the second piece of equipment I buy is an RODI unit. I get a little more "fancy", but even so, for less than $230 shipped from Buckeye, I've got a killer system.

This time around for my new tank I bought a rodi unit and it was worth every penny. My last tank was small so I bought pre mixed saltwater and had all kinds of issues.

I buy ro water out of a glacier machine at publix for $0.30 a gallon. 5 gallon buckets fit perfectly in it. I buy 40 gallons at a time and have never had any issues with algae or anything

I also buy from glacier and it is cheap and works great. They do alot more with there system than one can do at home with a simple rodi system. Multiple filters ,uv etc.

I use glacier as well, no problems here. I was actually having lots of problems when I was buying from my LFS. I am looking into buying an RO/DI unit just for convenience. I'm tired of having to go get water at the store all the time lol.

I think Im going to try the glacier water for the first time, even though I am getting an RODI unit, just to get it filled, and started. Than I can start making my own water after the initial setup. Since I have to fill a 180. Does anyone know where I might be able to get the 5 gallon jugs for a good price, or have some I may borrow just to fill the tank up this week.

Thanks

In all honesty it's better to just start with nice, fresh RO/DI water even during the cycle. I don't believe it would be cost efficient to buy 180 gallons worth of water that way as opposed to using an RO/DI unit you're already going to purchase, it may save time but I'm my opinion using RO/DI from the start is better in the long run. Buying my own unit was one of the best things I've done for this hobby.

I agree if you have the money to buy a rodi system first its best. I need to buy one myself. Just every time I have money I end up with more coral or something lol.
