I'm upgrading from 90g to 180g today! I'm so excited. Wish me luck!

my brother is sending me a tank and won't tell me anything except that it has a stand top & a drilled tank that is at least a 110 will be here next Mon or Tues I currently have a 90g also please give some details on how you plan to switch things over I'm pretty worried about how to get my babies to the new tank without killing everything

and a big congrats on the new tank :bounce: I feel your excitement:roll:

That is exciting spscrazy! Here is what we did...I got the LFS to help me. They're great folks.

Pre-made salt water in buckets. Had to buy larger skimmer, pump, UV etc. I didn't do a water change for over a month to let the tank get dirty.

* Syphoned water into buckets...just down to the highest rock.
* Placed rock first layer of rock and coral in buckets. Separated corals into groups to keep them from starting war.
* Repeated the process down to the next level of rocks/coral. We also used Brute barrels.
* Once the water was down to where the fish could barely swim, we netted them. We placed them in the buckets with the rock and coral. We separated them based on
compatibility in a small space.
* Cleared out a hole in one corner of the tank and syphoned the remaining water.
* Moved the small tank/stand and put the larger one in place.
* Transferred live sand from old tank to new and also added new bags of live sand.
* Plumbed the overflows from top down to the sump.
* Started adding water to the new tank. To keep from stirring up the sand so bad, buffer the flow with something flat. (we used the top of a styrofoam box)
* We placed the rock and corals into the tank, then the fish.
* We didn't have quite enough water, so we didn't put the lights up or start the pump or anything. We just put a bunch of powerheads in to keep everything flowing and
let everything chill and de-stress overnight.

Today -

* Add the rest of the salt water.
* Hook up the pump, skimmer, UV and lights
* Do the rockscape and place corals

I haven't bought my new LED lights yet, so I am going to have to use three 48" T5 fixtures and one 48" Marineland Reef Capable Fixture for a couple of weeks until I decide which ones I want.
One sad note --- my 7" Foxface Rabbitfish didn't make it. He totally freaked out when we moved him. I think he had a heart attack...he was way too stressed.

I would love some input for a cool rock scape. I'd love to see pictures posted on this thread to get ideas!

Thanks!
Connie

Congrats on your new tank Connie!! I just recently got a 90g in addition to my 30g and I love it. I can only imagine how great the 180g will be. Btw which LFS is helping you out? and sorry about your foxface

SPScrazy - I did not rinse the sand..used as is and added 3 bags of new. I used all the old water and then added 90+ gallons of new salt water. It was basically just like a BIG water change. Thanks for the Aquascape article!

Blake - The LFS I use is Aquarium Imports in Vestavia/Hoover.

I like those guys, I just got a dogface puffer from them a couple weeks ago. I wish they kept Tunze pumps and some different kinds of skimmers tho. They get alot of different kinds of fish compared to some other stores in our area.

Congrats!! Lookin' forward to those pics! ;)

Thanks everybody!

Update - I haven't taken any pics yet as my corals are rather unhappy right now. I am using the lights I had (3 T5s and one 48" marineland reef capable) to cover the 180 and it's just not enough. After much thinking and a lot of research, I decided on AI Vegas. I am really anxious to get them in and so are my corals...lol

I went with the Aqua C EV 240 skimmer and let me tell you that thing is sweet! It was producing gunk the first night. I would recommend this skimmer to anyone.

My six-line died today. Not sure why, he looked healthy; but......now that he is no longer with us, I am free to get other wrasses. I would like to have three. I know I want a Scott's Fairy Wrasse...what other two (reef safe) should I get?

Here are a few pictures of my new 180g upgrade. I only have one FTS and some pics of some of the critters. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks guys! I've been working really hard on it! I'll post more pics in a bit...my wonderful wireless is going in and out...grrrrr

I love the wrasse. Ive been thinking about getting an exquisite and a pink margin for my 90. My rock work looks terrible compared to yours tho. I might try and rearrange it now lol

I got the Scott's Fairy, Red Velvet Fairy and Blue Flasher. Unfortunately, yesterday I woke up to a dried out Blue Flasher on top of my glass cover. I have no idea how he could have jumped up there. I have a tight lid except where there are powerhead wires coming out, but he still shouldn't have landed on the glass covers at the front of the tank. Made me sad. I am looking for another...probably some kind of fairy.
