So I have a fowlr setup in my 30g hex and right now im running the standard lighting on it. I'm interested in trying to start corals like a torch seeing how you need to wait several months to a year before you can add an anemone. I have plenty of flow (1600gph) and my parameters are stable so any tips on whether I should go LED T5 or whatever would be awesome.

4 lamp T5 would do ya. All depends on what you are willing to spend up front. LEDs will last you alot longer, but are a bit more expensive up front. But T5 lights need to be changed bout every 6-9 months. Up to you.

I was thinking more along the lines of LED strips so I could just place them where my current lighting is. do you have any input on these? good/bad?

Most strip led won't have enough lumens to support coral check out aquatraders led quads very cheap and cool looking and it will work

Look at the OceanRevive Arctic S026 or the EverGrow D120. They are fairly inexpensive and OceanRevive is a sponsor here on R2R. I have 1 over my 24g frag tank and 2 over my 55g local tank. You would only need 1 and they have been on special for a few weeks.

HOw much are you looking to spend? I know Reef Radiance has some great deals on their fixtures and they can be had for under $150 easily. 1 fixture would be more than enough for your tank and you could then keep just about anything.
