I'm new to this and thia is my first tank upgrade. I'm currently running a nuvo peninsula 20 aio. I'm planning to move up to a waterbox 90 most likely.
I'm stable now and have fish and coral.
I'm planning to move over my rock, sand and water. How and what can I do to make it smooth as possible with no casualties?
Would love to hear any experiences or mistakes you've made so I can avoid them.

What i have done with small tank moves is below. Get new tank as ready as possible. New sand, fill with water, get running. Then take some live rock from smaller tank and any other sources(assuming adding rock if upgrading). Bottled bacteria if you want. Then let that tank run a week or two(or longer if needed). Using live rock from existing tank should limit cycle but always seems with a new tank setup have some issues so i slowly move fish over during period Then when i am comfortable i move over remaining rock/coral/fish. Downside of this is need for some duplicate equipment(heater/powerhead/return pump).

To safely move fish from an established tank to a new one takes time. Fully cycle the new tank for 3-4 weeks, then add a couple fish. After 10-14 days add a couple more, making sure not to more than double bioload.

As for coral, sps obviously takes the longest. Wait til you're growing coraline, usually 3-4 months. For lps and softies I added mine once the tank was fully cycled, 23 days in my case.

There is no way to to this both quickly and safely. Be prepared to have both tanks running simultaneously for two months. Good luck!

I’ve done several tank transfers without losing any livestock whatsoever. I agree to use new sand. When you transfer use all existing water possible, throw in a bottle of bac a few days ahead of time, transfer all rocks. Feed light for a week, slow ramp on lights.

So I thought it was a good idea to use that sand but I don't have to. Should I use live sand? Actually kind of want finer sand anyway.

So basically I'm looking at a full cycle even with my established rocks?
Btw I'm planning to add more live rock from the same lfs i got this from. My cycle time was basically nothing with these before.
