hello all. I currently have a 92g but have a 220g set up and almost ready to go. I obviously want to add more fish and was looking for advise

Current stock:
Purple tang
Yellow tang
Magnificent foxface
Flame angle
6 line wrasse
Royal gramma
And two clowns

Want to add:
Powder blue tang
Blonde naso tang
Possibly Marine Betta

Are these ok choices and what else would be ok to add? Thanks

The marine betta is a predator so it may go after smaller fish and inverts. I would say the sixline might be a target but it might be too wary and fast enough for it to not be a possible target of the marine betta. You might have some aggression from you're current tangs towards the new tangs so I would be careful with that.

A few anthias might be neat for this tank but you may also be approaching the appropriate fish limit as well.

Ok I’ll slash the Marine Betta idea. I guess I should say I have an sro-5000 skimmer rated for 500g and have a large 180g sump too.

While nutrient export and water volume is important, I would be more worried about the amount of space each fish has since tangs especially tend to get a bit aggressive if they are constantly running into each other. You've got the room for all of those tangs, but the more fish you add down the road, the less overall space each fish has and it can create tension.

Are you saying I have enough room in the 220 for what I have and the two additional or just what I currently have?

What you have plus the additional fish as long as you can keep nutrients and such under control.

Most likely fine to add the two tangs. Issues may arise initially but they will probably dissipate if there are enough hiding spaces. Once they all are full size you may have issues, but that's years down the road.

Thanks guys. I have a buddy who needs to move his powder blue. And I just like blonde naso so I was hoping to fit everything

Would it be ok to swap the naso with an Achilles if I found that first?

Achilles can be finicky, I'm not sure how it would do with a powder blue in a tank that size. I'm sure someone with hands on experience can tell us!

Marine bettas are more of a focused shrimp hunter than fish hunter. I have kept full grown marine bettas with fish that are smaller and slower than sixlines. IME I wouldn't give a second thought to a marine betta going after any of the fish on this list. In fact the sixline would be more problematic to any future small fish additions rather than the marine betta.

Achilles are a sensitive species, but also an aggressive species. One would not be good fit with a powder blue in that size tank.

So do you think the powder blue and naso would be my best combo to add?

In my 225:
6x clowns
8x Chromis
4x Tangs (Yellow, regal, sailfin, achilles)
3x Wrasse: Melanus, Pinkface, Red head
5x Anthias (lyretail and ignitus)
1x Two spot Goby
1x Foxface
2x Cardinals

The achilles rules the tank. The pinkface does not run from him like the rest and just ignores him. The achilles guards nori and tries to run the regal and sailfin off so i hang strips on opposite ends of the tank. The two types of anthias school together although. The melanus is agressive towards the pink face and the pink face is oblivious. The two spot and red head hide all the time. The clowns nest is a gsp. The cardinals stay out all night and never sleep, the regal is the biggest eater, anthias don't like prepared food, the fox face doesn't care for frozen food, and the all follow me from side to side when i walk past the tank and will school with my hand and nip at me as long as i don't put my hand in past my wrist.

I used to have a bluethroat, it killed new fish, took they eyes from a kole then went carpet surfing on Thanksgiving day...good riddance.

Years ago I had a marine beta in a 65 that ate every fish it would fit in its mouth.

I would not put a Powder in with an Achilles unless i had an 8ft 400g tank. You need to do your best to select tangs that can form a hierarchy or pecking order. In my case Achilles->Regal->Yellow->Sailfin. Ideally in my tank, I am 1 overstocked as a good rule of thumb for me has been no more than 1 tang or wrasse per 2ft of tank.

I may never mix triggers and tangs again....it did not go well for me because tangs can challenge triggers and when a trigger finally snaps fish die.

If you only see aggression at feeding time you can achieve success by feeding heavy, feeding often and feed in multiple areas of the tank all at once.

Tangs however, will usually learn to co-exist if you are lucky.

If you do add 2x more tangs, add them at the same time if possible. Otherwise naso fist and powderblue last.

So I got a powder blue and will be getting a blonde naso in the future. My question is, is there an order I should add the tangs to the 220 or all at once? My second question is would I be able to House a second set of clowns? Thanks

Naso tangs are more peaceful, so ideally it would be best to get him in first.

It should be possible to have a second set of clowns in that size tank.

If your tank is fully cycled and can handle the bio-load...I would put all the tangs in at one time as this will not allow the more aggressive ones to establish a territory.

The reason I wouldn't do this is that powder blues are more dominant than naso tangs. So if added at the same time the powder blue will be tank boss. Nasos are gentle giants. So if allowed to get established first, it can be the tank boss, but without nearly as much drama as the powder blue.

I thought of another question. After I add the blonde naso, how long should I wait to add the rest of the fish?
