Good day everyone!

We have a 20g tank which is just over a month running... we are looking to get a bigger tank, 55 to 60g to get the fish that we really want. When we started we just want really a small one as we think it’s hard to maintain. Now we are really into it and looking to get a bigger tank. We are not in a hurry, but certain that it is going to happen... Any sort of advise that you can suggest? How easy or hard it is to upgrade?

Thank you in advance ☺️

I upgraded in Dec 2018 from a JBJ 28g Nano Cube to a Red Sea E-260 with the sump upgrade kit, (81g total) which I highly recommend because it's great tank! I went with new live sand, (kept 1/2 cup from nano to seed) and new life rock, (kept 1 small rock from nano). Let new tank cycle for 3 months before moving corals and then drained nano to make catching fish easier after taking rocks out. T oget all transferred it took about a day.

Here is a pic from today.

I would advise passing on a 55 gallon. IMO it is a useless display tank because it is way too slim.
It's good lengthwise, depth is good but it is not wide enough.

Good luck with your upgrade!

Upgrades are fun! Planning out what equipment to choose is one of my favorite parts of the hobby. Along with the actual assembly of it all.

Recommend a 75 over a 55. Way better width for aquascaping. A 120 if you can swing it. Still a 4ft long tank if length is an issue. The larger the tank, the less parameters tend to swing. Making it inherently more stable.

With saltwater, it is always better to get something wider (wall to frot) than taller. Better light penetration and so much more room to aquascape. I would highly advise against the 55gal. If you feel that you really need to get that length and width, then go with a 40gal long as it is shorter and easier to manage as far as lighting and maintnance but you will still find yourself squeezing your hand between the rock and glass to clean. Don't know how big you want to go - but, a 40 breeder is a step in the right direction and that can be had for $40 new during Petco's $1/gal sales. Then 75/90/120gal and of course all the Red Sea dimensions are sick.
