im going to be upgrading to a Red Sea 425XL in the next few weeks from my Reefsys 255. Going to keep my current rocks and add more but also use new sand. Most people recommend putting rock work in and the adding the sand; if i went down this route would my corals be ok whilst the sand settles? or is there another better method.

I know this question has probably been asked a few times but just wanted to get a general feel of which way to go. I can break the reefsys255 down after everything is moved over so I don’t really need to use buckets to keep things in as the new tank is just going to sit alongside the old one

Thanks

I added the sand first then the rock work. Had no problems. I have transferred both fresh and saltwater this way. When I've added the sand 'last' - it was always a royal mess.

Many thanks. Was mainly worried about how stable the rocks would be.

What does the overall transfer plan look like?

If you are setting up the tank in a different location, you could buy some Stax or Marco base rocks, get those plus the sand and most of the water into the target tank, then transfer right into this.

New tank is going right next to the old one. I have about 20kg of aquascape rock sitting in a bucket ready to go in along with my current rock. Once the new tank is up then going to break the Reefsys down.

Then I think the plan outlined above would work. This way you use the new rock as a base, prep everything and let the sand settle, then finish the transfer.
