Uploading pics error message

I am trying to upload an image and am getting the following message "the uploaded image is too big" for an image that is 4.53 MB. Several of my other pics were about this size so I'm confused. What are the acceptable parameters for images. Thanks in advance.

1200 long x 1200 wide pixels equals 4"x4" or 5.5mb

Is your picture longer in one of the dimensions?

Try cropping and resizing it.
