I want an urchin in my sps aquarium but do not know if they are like turbo snails were they knock off stuff from the rocks. What is the most sps friendly urchin?

I would suggest a long spine urchin "diadema" they seem to be less destructive and nice to look at...they do eat coraline algae though if you like it.

They can reach a foot in diameter.... If you have a smaller tank I would look into a short spined urchin of the family Echinometra or if you can find one that is positively identified of arbacia. All urchins will bump un attached frags from time to time but these two stay under 4 in so its not too bad. The tuxedo urchins are a nightmare as they use anything not glued down as cover and will carry things off.

Does this answer your question?

I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, I can't put anything small in my tank. He was in there for about 10 years.

This is how I dress to collect tuxedo urchins.

Luis I have 2 pencil urchins and am thinking about getting rid of one of them. I don't have enough coraline yet to support both. He will knock off small things that are not attached but its not a huge deal.

My tuxedo wears a frag of star polyps as a hat
