Those are amphipods for sure. Not harmful and great food for the fish. It's cool that they all of a sudden swarmed the tank, but weird. The crab situation is weird too. Sorry, but I wont be any help. Hopefully somebody else can help better.
I also thought it was cool and still do. Just don't want to wake up in the morning to a nuked tank with dead fish and corals. :(

If it was me, I'd add some fresh carbon in case of contaminant...

Do you pull outside air to skimmer or anything?

Reminds me a bit of the flea products we use on dogs, it actually cause the Fleas to become overexcited and very active before they die.

One product is even know to cause the "tickle effect" where the dog feels the Fleas scrambling around and acts like it's being tickled

Didn't think of that. I do have carbon on hand but haven't used any because of what I read about it *possibly* affecting the Hippo. I'll throw some in.

I know you're talking about your tang, but my imagination took over and I couldn't help but chuckle at thinking about an actual Hippo in your tank. Which could really cause a problem, especially if you upset him!

Are you sure it's pods your seeing in the water column?

When emeralds release eggs they kind of hang off the rock and wave their claws sort of throwing the eggs into the current. And the fish go crazy eating them up.

Only time I've ever seen pods go into the column was due to a small amount of Bayer released into the tank. It paralyzed them all for a while but they ultimately lived.

Yup Definitely pods. Even the filter socks were full. And the socks have been in less then day but I still wanted to change them out tonight because of this. I I believe my cleaner shrimp has passed. No movement even when I touch him. Still going to leave him in the tank. The Emerald crab is hanging on the rock but I can touch him also and get no response. Have added some BRS Carbon.

No I don't pull don't outside. No dosing, only use Kalk in my Auto top off. Has me stumped for sure.

Not much else I can do for tonight. The water column is clear and the fish and corals look great. SPS has nice extensions as well as the LPS. Just hope everything pulls thru tonight. Update coming in the AM.

Oh man, something must have gotten in the tank. I hope the carbon works. I'd consider a waterchange if you have the water on hand as well.
Have about 20 gallons on hand. I'm making more water now. Plan on changing out 50 gallons in the AM. Can't hurt for sure.

Final update. First thing this morning I woke to a dead Cleaner Shrimp and 2 dead Emerald crabs. My yellow tang turned white in his chest and head area. Did a 65 gallon water change first thing this morning and everything seems to be back to normal tonight. My yellow tang has his color back and everything looks happy and healthy. I'm thinking its the water change and carbon. Probably will never know what caused this issue. But I lost no snails and no hermits. Chalk it up to just another experience in this hobby. Thanks for all the replies!

One thing I did notice, I always look into my blacked out tank when the lights are off. Last night and this morning I couldn't find crap for pods :(. But before the bloom I would see tons and tons crawling all over the rocks when the lights were out.
