So I have 3 tanks, but only one is salt water, last time my power went out I learned how to "aerate" my water using a cup and making bubbles by dropping the water back in, by my 40 gallon reef has about 57-60 lbs of live rock, doesn't the rock aerate it?? I wasn't sure of the answer to this. So I am indeed doing the cup thing right now, but do I need to keep doing it? It'll make it easier on me if not lol, and any other truck to keep it aerated

battery powered water cyclers and airstones are a godsend when it comes to these times, but the cup trick is what i had to do about a month ago, consider yourself the iron lung of your tank right now, i had zero losses and id like to feel as tho what i did made the difference, but to answer your question, no, the rock is used as a Biological filtration to help remove invisible dissolved organics (like what fish poo and food turns into) , what your doing with the cup is entirely different, your agitating the surface of the water helping gas exchange and keeping the water moving so it don't become stagnant

id like to tell you theres a better solution but there really isnt, if you dont have the emergency battery op equip, and you dont have a generator, the cup trick is the only thing ive personally herd of remotely working, but its not a solution, just a band aid, the longer your tank is out of power, the worse things will get. I hope you can get it worked out, and the next chance you get, invest in a battery operated pump and/or a power station (you can find em at places like walmart and possibly radio shack, you plug em into the wall and charge em, and they have outlets that you can plug things into in the event you need power but dont have it, its a little cheaper than a generator)

I had a black out of power for 10 hours before here in San Diego, California. I just used a large spoon and gave the tank a good stir every 15 min, the power went out at 4pm and didnt come back on until 2am man i set the alarm on my phone every 15 minutes for if i would fall asleep. Nothing died using the stirring method.

If you have a large mixing bowl and a whisk you can aerate small portion of water with a lot of oxygen in a short time. I got some battery powered air pumps off Amazon for this scenario. They run on 2 "D" batteries and they come with air stones. I think they were on sale for a dollar or two. GL

Fishing departments at walmart, and other stores have the battery operated air stone for minnow buckets. They also sell power inverters. With the power inverter you can run several pumps off of your car battery, depending on how many watts the inverter puts out. With enough output, you might be able to run heaters, and maybe even some lighting as well.
