Urgh seriously.

Hello,

I’m honestly confused on the whole thing on the calcium reactor. Now online it says they monitor and keep alk and mag and trace elements constant. However all my lfs said it only maintains calcium and they you would need to maintain the others. So that has me thinking a lot more of it only does calcium. If all three are wrong, errr that really makes me wonder lol.

I’m curious how often people feed their corals sps and lps mainly and some softies? I just finally was able to pick up reef roids (wow not cheap), but I have used other coral food and well was never consistent with it. I think running super low nutrients may may make them starve.’

Herein lies the challenge with taking advice of LFS employees. I KNOW there are some good ones. I also happen to know of some “reputable” and highly successful LFS that are owned and staffed by people I would barely classify as hobbyists. They essentially just order livestock and gear and keep books while giving questionable advice. Yours may be better, but the advice you were given about calcium reactors would indicate they have zero experience or research on the method, and are advising based on the title only.

As someone mentioned, a calcium reactor is merely a recirculation canister, with flow slowly running through it. Co2 is added to the recirculating water to acidify it. Your media will dictate what you’re supplementing.

Synthetic aragonite? You’re just adding mostly calcium and alkalinity with little to no trace elements

Remag? Pretty much all magnesium with a few other irrelevant elements

Reborn? Coral skeletons and mollusk shell bits. Any element used to create those skeletons is dissolved and added back to the water. Calcium, alkalinity, and many trace elements.

There will still be some things missing for tissue creation and pigmentation. Those elements and compounds are added through feeding.

On my sps heavy mixed tank I run a calcium
Reactor with about 12 pounds of media, at 80 ml/min with a ph of 6.8. I don’t test my effluent dkh. Some swear by that method. I haven’t found it necessary. I still feed heavily. Spot feed all corals 3-4 days a week, feed the fish 2-3 heavy feedings a day. I still export nutrients heavily through vodka dosing and occasional Phosphate rx use. I still find it necessary
To do usually bi-weekly 10-20% water changes.

A calcium reactor is a great method of supplementing, and has a ridiculously high ceiling on what it can add before needing to up size. No method is perfect though and eventually something will require intervention on other levels.

Hello,

So many responses lol love it so give me a second to catch up on. Yes there are some hmmm oh heck nerusurgeons that think they are the gift to the peanut farm. But hey glad I didn’t take that route or I’d be insane lol. @Bpb excellent source of info and sadly it’s what happens when one lives in Idaho. Not many know much about anything lol.

I like that line if you don’t mind I will use it with my residents that have loose tongues in public places. I’ll credit my reefing friend with the saying but it is a good point driver.
Lol, feel free to claim it for yourself!

As I get older I discover all of the best ideas are simply recycled after they were forgotten. :-)

I got it from another cranky old man when I was young and stupid and couldn't keep my mouth shut. ;-)

Now I'm the cranky old man. :-)

Wait! What?!

Hello,

Isn’t it funny as we age and mature about things? Trends really never leave we just grow out of them. Like when I was much younger going to bed around midnight was awesome. Now as I’m older, if it’s past 1030 it’s too late lol. But things I use to find annoying in people older than I, well I have begun to like and leave my old ways lol for the next younger person. However, the cartoons from the 80s still are 100000 times better than today. Does anyone miss the Sunday comics lol.

The only thing I haven’t really changed much other than expanding is Taste in music. For example I don’t listen to many songs maybe 20 tops from like 2000 on lol. But still enjoy music from 70s 80s etc. but what’s weird is (Boise is weird but their oldies station lol plays songs from queen or Duran Duran, billy squire. But they say they are the classic oldies lol then once in a while song from the 60s super groups. But yes even I have found were co workers do things and it will drive me nuts. Yet, I use to do it five years ago. Hmmmmm oh and they are older than I.

Never seen a Neurosurgeon behave so well.....badly.

You must not know many neurosurgeons.
One shouldn't generalize but I will -
They are far and away the most ill-tempered and uptight of all surgical specialists.
Obviously there are exceptions but they mostly help prove the rule.

All I’ve worked with have been extremely
Hot cold. Some of them you want to wait in the parking lot and fight them after the case. Others you want to go have a beer with. Rarely any in between

Hello,

90% of them that I have met are prude and the worst bed side manners than most people I know. Some of them that do both neurology and psychiatric are they worse of the bunch. Not to mention most surgeons I have seen are pretty bad concerning bed side manners. Even when they make a mistake and have to do surgery again, and a normal er doctor points it out it usually doesn’t go to well. Most of the time surgeons and nerologists have terrible bed side manners and horrible time dealing with things when they are wrong. But to their defense they do have an extremely complex and mind warping job :)

Funny that you should mention this. I was just thinking yesterday that I always wait for the weekends to roll around, so I don't have to go to bed at 10:00pm on a work night. Unfortunately, I have become accustomed to falling asleep at 10:00pm now and I generally fall asleep at 10 on the weekends too. I may be sitting at my computer in my room and fall asleep at the keyboard though. Sad. No more party animal here. :)

I can't even listen to the music of today. Not what you hear on the radio anyway. My tastes are oddball and mostly stuck in the 60s and 70s. Some 80s, but not much. From '90 on, I just gave up on any new music. Remember, I am just an old gas passer now, stuck in my ways and tastes. :)

A lot of my music in my collection is by people that I actually know. I am a fan of song writers. I enjoy well crafted songs that won't blow out my hearing any worse than it already is. My involvement with the parrot head club for so many years, allowed me to meet dozens of musicians from all over the country. You will never hear any of them on FM radio, but will hear most of them on Radio Margaritaville on satellite radio. It is kinda neat to actually know the artist that you are listening to. I always enjoy watching the look of puzzlement on guest's faces when they start looking through the hundreds of CDs and albums that I have. Most of the titles that people recognize are from the 60s-70s. Satellite radio or my iPhone is all I listen to in the car nowadays. I do really miss the old original FM radio though. Miss hearing album cuts - or whole albums on the air. Those were the days. :)

I am privileged to know the two local Neurosurgeons as friends. I also have friends who are Dentists, Orthopedic Surgeons as well as other specialty Physicians. They all are very patient oriented and a great group of people! As you may know my dad was a Physician with lots of fellowships and specialties. So I expect more from the profession than a measurement of egos! I guess since I have that background I have no problem asking for better from those who have spent so much time in patient contact. I understand the whole jaded thing. I just guess the education system should wash out those who have very little compassion or empathy for the human condition! I have very little patience for educated individuals who think their education makes them Masters Divine! So as a result I am shocked by bad behavior from professionals in medicine or dentistry! Right or wrong I expect more.....I think as a patient I am mindful of the necessity to self advocate because we are all human. And remember they call the profession of medicine a practice! Would you want me to show up and tell you I am running a practice on your new kitchen? I think not! How about I am practicing on the construction of your new mega aquarium? I am skilled at both but mindful of my humanity and my ability to make mistakes....I just don't get paid for them lol!

You people are all awesome by the way!

Hello,

Oh lovely I do remember that about them but not that makes me nervous lol. I know I’m gonna come home from work and see one of my nephew’s banging on it with a ball ping hammer, it’s gonna snap and go right through my rough. My nephew will look at me and go look nasa finally launched a rocket.

What I have seen though is, wow they are not cheap and it’s almost 1,000 just for one my size. I’m not sure what’s cheaper the way I do it now, or get a calcium reactor. Then I have to dial it in which should not be too hard as long as both parameters are equal prior to me turning it on :)
It’s ball peen or ball pein hammer.

Hello,

I have always loved the people on here it has always made me smile and it’s nice to come to. In terms of people, regardless of profession or wealth, people should have manners and respect. At times when people have bad days or whatever sometimes I’m the kicking cushion. I can’t say I’m perfect because far from it but rarely do I react in a way that would embarrass my parents or friends etc. I have some wonderful co workers and with any job ones I just avoid. I find it easier when I can’t avoid them to just make sure I do what I’m suppose to do correctly, and that it’s always in the best for whom ever.

@Fin lol there is no way your old if your still like me and watch looney tunes. I don’t have sat radio etc but I do listen from 60s to early 90s. There are a few groups that are later than that but usually one or two songs. For example I really want this song which was done as a duet by John Stewart band and Stevie nicks (gold) except iTunes is sooo bad. They put the orginal version on her newest album and you can only get it with the whole album. Except I already have all the other songs. But the version you can buy (that says classic lol, was done much much later is horrible and doesn’t even have Stevie Nicks in the vocals lol). Plus going to a music shop aka cd store really doesn’t exist in Boise. Now we have one good vinyl place but they are more collectors than anything and silly expensive.

I know the song well. The original version is on John Stewart’s album entitled, “Bombs Away Dream Babies” from the end of the 70s. It featured Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac. I have read that Stewart was forced to write the song by his record company, or they wouldn’t release the album. He actually hated the song. I would think you could get that single, or at least that album on iTunes. I have the original LP and the single is on my phone. You do have an old music soul. :) For those of you following along at home, John Stewart was a member of the folk group “The Kingston Trio.”

Thanks! That was fun. Been forever since I heard that. :-)

It was said that he eventually refused to do the song anymore. He said it meant nothing to him, because it wasn’t something that he would have ordinarily written.

Hello,

Good morning all, once again I am up way to early lol. Yes that is the song and I will try that album. @Fin thanks I couldn’t find the orginal album it was released on. The new version under him on iTunes is totally different and errr kinda sucks. But when he did it with Fleetwood Mac it put a nice edge on it. It’s hard to believe he hated that song lol it’s the only one I knew of from him that did pretty well (like number 14).

It would be neat to find it on vinyl, I have come to learn that record players (good ones) actually sound better and
More musical than cds or iPhones etc. I do have an old tatste for music which I blame my parents. Another thing iTunes has done is like the Queen greatest hits 3 cd album sounds way different than the actual cd. Maybe I am going insane or hearing things, but musically and vocally they age different.

Nothing like vinyl. That is why it is making a comeback. Yes, they scratch and pick up pops and clicks if you don’t care for them properly. I tried my best, but did a lot of handling them at parties where adult beverages were being served. Most of my LPs are in good shape though. Of course, I am almost deaf in my left ear, so my audiophile days are long gone. :( But yeah, when you listen to mp3s the sound is compressed and it doesn’t sound the same. Sounds like you have a good turntable, now you will just have to find the vinyl.

Hello,

I actually have a really nice record player and the stuff that goes with it. (Nope I didn’t select it, was given to me from my older brother who is the absolutely music nut in the family), his home stereo is ridiculous expensive (like the cost of my Jeep lol). But with that said, I have some records not many. But usually that’s all he plays and it sounds truly amazing. Maybe we should all go back to records and 8 tracks lol.
