I would tend to agree with Ms. Erica. Possibly a bacterial growth. Hard to tell from the picture.

Hello,

Is this so called creepy bacterial growth dangerous to my corals or fish? I guess they get a vinegar bath this weekend lol. I am not sure if my tank will stay at temperature if I take down one of the heaters. They are both 300 Watts and I have dual returns so flow won’t be impacted much. Any other suggestions :)

@redfishbluefish would you happen to know what this is or @Brew12 and or the reef square lol I couldn’t find a way to tag them

Well, for one, we now call the "Reef Square" the Reef Squad , and when you want to tag them, use the pound symbol in front..... #Reefsquad, any thoughts on what's going on in Sarah's tank? See post 1497.

Sarah, it would help if you could tell the squad about this tank....age and test numbers. Without going through 1500+ posts, I'm not sure if this is your old or new tank.

I wouldn't worry about it. It looks like a common bacteria and the type people who carbon dose hope to grow to lower nitrates. With different flow and lighting it isn't unusual to see different stuff grow in our sumps than our displays.

I am going for Diatoms, cut some and take it to work to look at it under a microscope to make sure;)

Hello,

Lol good point I didn’t think of that right off the start. #reefsquad the tank is almost 11 months old, 240 gallons with a 40 gallon sump. The current water parameters are normal from the standard api test, meaning 440 cal, 9 alk,
Sal 1.025, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, like 5 ppm nitrate and phosphate is between the first and second on the color card so like 0.25 roughly. All corals and fish are happy, temp is at 78, my flow is roughly 18,500. I have a mixed reef, so sofites lps and sps.

I have had some issues with cyano and turned the lights down, and changed the flow every two days to no luck and it only stays on the far left front corner right under the wave maker. It was on the right side, but added a sand sifting goby and he cleared that up. I’m hoping he discovers the left side also.

I have turned the sump light off, just till I cold make sure this doesn’t spread to my display. This weird bacteria thing is only in my sump. I have had to use no prox recently to drop nitrates when they spiked suddenly. I have been weening it off and it’s now barely at the very first mark on the its measure cup so it was at 6ml and now less than 1ml.

@Brew12 thanks for your help I wasn’t sure and since it had not spread to the display I wanted to act quickly. It was just amazing how fast they developed and were kinda mucus looking like an alien sneezed into his hand and then threw it at something. But thanks for your helped I have missed ya.

But thanks for your helped I have missed ya.
Glad to help and reach out any time! Getting my son ready to ship to Marine Corps boot camp is consuming most of my time right now. Less than a week till he leaves so trying to do as much with him as possible.

My oldest brother who is coming home here soon is in the Marinew and went to OCS and flies helicopters with the carrier group 2 I believe. So I’m jealous that he is out on the ocean for six months to a year at a time. He said his officer boot camp was interesting but extremely hard. Quite a few left but he said it has changed drastically since he did it. When you mentioned that to me before I asked him and back in his day they could swear and hit you etc and do harsh punishments, use live ammunition for drills etc.
Now they are not allowed to do any of that at all, which is good lol.

I’m sure he will do well and it sounds like he prepared well for it. I wish him luck :).

Thanks! He is going enlisted. He did ok in school but doesn't much care for being in a classroom. He will be much happier following in his mothers footsteps by being a Marine.

He is in for a tough time, especially for the first few weeks. Things have changed, but they still make it stressful. For instance, they figured out that flying wasn't stressful enough so they send them in on buses unless it is over 14 hours away. After spending all day on the bus, they keep them up for at least the first 36 hours after they arrive to make sure they are sleep deprived. By the time they get through receiving, get their hair cut, uniforms issued, weapons issued, and are turned over to their drill instructors they are already exhausted. Then the fun starts! :p

I have to admit, I was less nervous when I went to boot camp than I am having to send my son. I'm going to be a nervous wreck before this week is over!

Hello,

@jsker lol that’s what mine looked like when I did it and I didn’t know if I should cry or laugh. It really was not all very pleasant lol. I know how the mom feels yet, the child probably didn’t know or had no idea. But it makes you put money away safely, unlike her and I.

Hello,

Good ahhh wait it’s afternoon now to every one :). Finally energized from another 24 hour shift :(. After falling asleep on the couch with a plate of pizza on my stomach, I’m now awake :).

I’m proud to say my ladder goby isn’t shy anymore and all over the tank @Erica-Renee eating sand lol, you know what I mean. Since he has been in the tank the cyano has all but gone away and really happy I don’t have to use chemi clean.

Trying to figure out how to scrape coralline from the bottom of my tank with my tiny arms. My window scraper isn’t strong enough to knock it off. But here are some pics of the 240 at almost 11 months old. :)

But a magnet cleaner should work for you just fine.

Synergy reef Shadow overflow . This is NOT!!!!! Living up to its Price tag... But since i have glued pvc into it i am wondering if i can return it.. The inside Weir is FAR FROM Large enough .. So far NOT Happy.. Its Just not pulling debris over thru its teeth the trash is pulled toward the teeth then as water flows over them the partials seem to be pushed down under the water and not over

Hello,

Sorry my friends I have been crazy busy with just about everything. I will say that the sand sifting gobies are great and getting rid of small amounts of cyano lol. He has really made my sand bed really pretty again in a very short time frame.

Between work, being sick lol and (I’m so doomed) and another car accident, in a siblings car I may add, I’m really fed up with airbags. But have been feeling better, just as odd as it may sound, didn’t think I would get sick so fast working in a hospital. Yet, could be just me being exhausted as well and it’s just darn cold here. The other day it rained and good grief, it came in straight and sideways, and slant ways and backwards. I had my Jeep which is a soft top, and the back was slightly not tucked into the gate door thing. Anyway it soaked the back of my jeep, it was like me spilling water all over again, only this time it was fresh water :).

So update on my ice cap gyre, lol well let’s say if you have issues hmmmm you may have some problems. It has decided to make an incredibly annoying whiny noise. After maybe 25 attempts, I was finally able to speak to someone. Also, sadly the only way to get help is by filling out a work request order online.

After speaking with a rep, they told me lol, that the noise can happen right as you install it, and or anytime down the road. It’s due to the plastic bushings seating themselves. It’s suppose to come with a second set and they suggest you replace them every 90 days. I had no idea that would even happen and it was dead silent brand new. It still works great but @Erica-Renee (sorry I didn’t know took a few days ago), the noise is normal and is not a warranty replacement. Yet to buy said bushings, they are 40 dollars and you have to send it to them to do. After speaking with them, you have to completely take apart the main housing, to remove the ones that are inside of it. This tech said, anyone who is mechanicaly smart can do it in about an hour time frame.

Yet, if we do it, then it voids the one year warranty also lol (really), and or if we send it, we have to pay their service tech to do it. The one on the end caps he said you push out with like a small socket and use some force with your thumbs to get them in.

So lol do I put up with the noise or, hmm send it in every 90 days and it’s not even guaranteed to make the noise go away. Now it doesn’t hurt the performance any, but it is awfully annoying. @Erica-Renee lol so if yours start doing this at any time soon, please don’t throw them at me :).

@Brew12 lol I’m jealous of the T-Rex his arms are much bigger than mine :(.

I knew about the bushing and Maintenance requirements. Mine came with extra set of bushings and yes they are easy to change and only takes maybe 3-5 min Mine are not very loud . Rather they are better then other pumps. Well One of them can replace 4 of my other pumps so maybe its worth it.. Time will tell..

I am not so Sure about the Synergy Reef Overflow box either. Thou it can handle a 3000 GPH . Anyway still tweaking plumbing on the new tank setup , Working on trimming out the stand and Then I am going to tweak the Rock work . Once all that is done can start putting the corals back.. FFun fun fun fun fun
