Urgh seriously.

You wouldn't lose anything, if you do it right. Set the 425 up and let it get through its cycle and maybe even follow the 4 month cycle that World Wide Corals recommends. I heard Tony Vargas speak at one of our club meetings a few years ago and he recommended something very similar. That's what I plan to do with my Reef Savvy - should it ever get wet. :-)
Once the big tank is cycled and stable, start moving your inhabitants over from the 225 a little at a time.

Hello

So as promised I did some tank maintenance and promised to post pics. My iPhone camera isn’t very good with the lights but I tried to dim the lights. It was horrible pics with the blues on but this is about 13 months old now. Suggestions always welcomed :) so hopefully my friends here will enjoy them :)

Your tank is doing great! That is fantastic growth for a 13 month old system!

Hello,

Awww thanks it’s much appreciated, and I’m still striving to make it better. I have had a few mistakes but I didn’t realize at the time how hard mixed tanks are.

Any suggestions on how to make things better or grow better lol. I’m not in a hurry or race but love to see it mature.

@Fin love the idea once I cycle the new one, what should it do with the live rock and sand in my 240?

If it were me, I would start the new tank off with whatever additional rock you are adding with new sand, along with a few pieces of your old rock and a few cups of your old sand from the 225. Let it sit. As the tank matures, you can gradually add a few more pieces of your rock, until the tank stabilizes. Then start adding a few inhabitants and a little more rock over time, until you have everything moved over. I would just toss out what is left of the old sand. Of course, I have never swapped over big tanks like that, so just saying what I would do if I wanted to make as gentle a transition as possible.

Hello,

Sorry my friends once again I didn’t see any notifications on my thread and just now saw them. @Erica-Renee the only fun I have ever held really or shot was my nephews battery powered nerf gun. I may have to see if they work with water.

@Fin I was looking up how much water and rock I would need and wow. The lfs suggested about 300-350 pounds of rock and I haven’t figured the rock displacement yet for water volume. But the sump is 90 gallons so 425 with 90 is gonna be about 515 total water volume minus rock volume and the sump will only be about 50-75 full, so I’m think maybe 400 roughly. But prices for live rock sure has gone up since my 240.

Now it’s 3.99 a pound for live rock and 2.99 dead rock and water is 1.50 a gallon now. So I’m probably close to 700-1000 in cost for rock and water. Forgot live sand which is like 80 for 50 pounds and lfs suggested 250-350. I can probably put in the new rock as base rock. But still have the idea from @120reefkeeper from his tank using staks rock and building the whole thing and what not. If I build the base not sure I can incorporate my live rock and still have it so if @120reefkeeper you have any ideas I’d love to hear them :).

I think 400 gallons of saltwater is the correct estimate.

Hello,

Well I am doing my last minute Xmas shopping and errands before I work tonight. Grrr. Surprised how busy stores are on Xmas eve holy moly. Traffic is crazy and I could roller skate faster then drive my Jeep. That’s it I need the Barbie car, it’s better will last long enough, and I can drive on the side walks and avoid traffic and traffic lights. I will have to buy one of the bike horns that go beep beep for those doing their darling Xmas walks in the freezing cold weather will move a little quicker :). The good thing is it will warm them up and get their heart racing.

Ahh... the advantages of having all of my Christmas shopping done by Thanksgiving. I don't miss stores around Christmas, I avoid them like the plague.
Good luck!

Hello,

@Brew12 do you have any suggestions on how to trim the leather?
I just cut leathers with a nice sharp single edge razor blade. I haven't ever had any negative effects from cutting them. They are pretty hardy corals. You can run some carbon, if you like.

I think you can do it with a scalpel but I haven't done it before.
I know it can be done safely and easily outside of the tank. The toxins really aren't dangerous to people but they can harm other corals. Especially if cutting them inside the tank and they release a lot of slime.
If you need to do it in the tank, make sure you run GAC and try to do a large water change 30 minutes or so after you finish cutting.

$1.50 a gallon would absolutely justify getting the shiny new RODI unit. [emoji846]

Looking forward to the new build.

two water changes would pay for the Unit. Not to mention wasted time and effort driving and Packing water. Its a NO BRAINER..

Hello;

I have a razor knife xacto and I do have some scalpels. I wasn’t sure about the toxins since there is no way I can remove it from the tank. Do they sting other corals if they are growing next to sps etc?
