Urgh seriously.

Hello,

Well today I was off work from doing my shift (back on 24 shifts I definitely didn’t miss those bloody nightmares. I had my test done and the alk and cal are where they are normally again but tank is still upset. Probably gonna just force myself to do water changes (yuck).

When I was off work oddly I couldnot sleep. It’s what happens when someone is mowing the yard at 715 am, and the sun isn’t even up. Anyway did some pottery and for the first time in my life I saw a mouse. It came out from some boxes, sat down looked at me, and of course I looked at it as clay went everywhere, mud flies every where. But he went back on his way to another box, stopped looked at me and then vanished. Needless to say, I know have an official landmine in my garage, good luck buddy. I was gonna be sweet and do the catch and release ones, but he looks like A repeat offender sooooo its the mouse trap. (Gosh I sound so mean). But so far not a single snap. Maybe they are just gonna leave, cause as much as i hate the fur balls, I don’t like harming things. Yet knowing my luck I will have thousands and I’ll cry every time. Maybe I should put my blue tooth speaker and mp3 and just do mass repeat of the song by queen Another bites the dust. It may disturb them, naw probably not, (no idea where they are at or how they came in, but it’s time to check the tank supports and I’ll land mine everything down there also.

But today I made some new additions for co worker requests one asked for a large noodle bowl pretty neat idea, and the second was actually challenging, a lidded vase, where as the vase comes up, it stops and there is a lid. Made the vase that’s done now have to focus on the lid, because I can’t throw like a normal lid, because I have to match the lines on the vase. But hey it’s gonna be a fun challenge.

as promised I have taken 2 pics of my tank and it’s trying but I stopped buying corals until I figure it out.

Reminds me of the old days when people used to cycle tanks by peeing in them. Of course I never did that

Hello,

Oh goodness you had to bring that up lol. That will be my known legacy, who was Sarah, oh some girl who had a salt water tank and her nephew used her sump tank has toilet. Knowing my luck the gave me fish tank has a head stone saying pee here if needed. Yup lol on the good side it gave me tons of great friends so with that said I’m glad it happened:)

I'd consider myself fortunate if that was the worst thing I was known for.

Glad to have met you.

Hmm.. could this be the missing ingredient that is causing your tank to be a brat? ;Writing;Wideyed

Hey Sarah, remember me? :-) I have been dodging hurricanes for the last couple of months and I haven't been very successful. We had two direct hits (well landfall within 12 miles of each other) from two different storms within six weeks. Still trying to get the house repaired and back on track. I just thought I would drop in to see how you were doing. Are you still healing up well?

I like the new hobby you have found. You are very talented and it is good that it brings you peace and occupies your mind. Glad to see you posting again. That is good for you too.

Hello,

Omg how could I forget you, you are an amazing friend. I’m so terribly sorry about your home and very greatful your family is well and not harmed (physically). I know this has had a huge emotional impact on you and your family. I have not been on much, mainly the shyness took over. I feel terrible that I don't post daily has I used to or well a lot like I use to.
How are your homes and how bad is the damage. I hope the insurance covers all of it (deductible minus).
My tank has been a brat and ever since I was hospitalized and recovering it has been having issues. Still trying to get it stable and working on a new problem I have 2 heaters and one seems to be a rogue. Came home sat and my tank was 84 degrees and both heaters on and under 80. Unplugged both and turned on the ac and tuned the lights off. Was so warm I put a block of ice in the sump tank. Left them off all night and tank went back to 78. Turned one on and it stayed at 77 and it’s set for 80. Turned the second one on and it stayed at 77 both activated. Stayed at 77 for most of the day then my phone alarm went off and it was at 81 all of a sudden. So I shut them off, and will get new heaters today. I know it’s not the current USA temp sensor has I have a kitchen and digital and it reproduces the same temp of 84.
I’m still doing the pottery I did some this weekend and yesterday and I finally have some finished ones that I will post. I’m doing different vases now, and did a lidded jar yesterday for whatever reason lol.

On the glazed finished pieces. The idea is to mix and get some glazes to run and react. I have had some interesting chemical reactions. Since I make and mix my own those ummm super hard chemistry classes are paying off (finally). But 90% of these pieces are test pieces. I don’t want to glaze a really nice vase with a terrible color lol. The tall skinny vase or aka Rebecca pof is about 16 inches tall, (my arms are not long enough to go much larger unless I do sectionals), and other tall vase is like 13-14 tall, each was made with 6 pounds of clay which is really good. The jar is 12 tall and is a mixed of three clays chocolate, white, and an off white so it should give me swirls when I rib it again. The second pic is a lidded 1 pound jewelry jar. Through the knob in w the lid (all one piece). I also made a 1 pound gobblet or whatever those are called lol, but it’s all one piece and has it looks one would think it’s solid clay but it’s hollow, (lower body I made the shapes (tiny fingers really help), then closed them off then the top is just like a wine glass shape. So it could be a wine glass or hold a larger candle etc. that’s the last 2 pics).

We were lucky. We needed to replace the shingles on the roof, the ceiling in the living room, our fence, patio cover, and there was some other exterior damage to the house that needed repair. That was from the first storm, Laura. Most of that has now been repaired. My mom's house fared a little better and still need to finish up a few things there. We didn't have any additional from the second storm (Delta) but had it rained just a little more, our house would have flooded. Most of the homes on our street got water in them. We were lucky that our house is a little higher than most in the neighborhood. We still have huge piles of debris in front of our house, like most people in town. They are picking it up, but there is so much of it that it will just take time to get it all removed. We are almost back to normal now though, so all is good.

Your pottery is really awesome. That is a cool hobby/skill to have. I am glad that it gives you some peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment. So many variations in colors, shapes and textures. You have many talents.

I think a lot of people replace their heaters on a fairly regular basis, every year or so. The one I had in my 140 was 14 years old and still working, but that is probably not normal. I did throw it away when I took the tank down. I did get my tank wet in July but was just letting it run and hadn't stocked it before Laura hit. It sat for several weeks without power (it took 22 days to restore power to my house) so I took it down. I will set it back up soon, but haven't gotten around to it yet. The longest build ever. :)

Don't be a stranger and wait a month to post again. No need to be quiet and shy with any of us here. We are all friends and extended family. This is a great place to vent, if nothing else. Take care of yourself.

Hello,

So I promised to not be well such a stranger lol or probably more terms of shy. Finally just said, okay and bought 2 new ones. Now here is what’s odd, the new ones are digital and the control sits on the outside etc.
Now I left those at only 77 to be safe. Now for some reason I’m not recalling my thermal dynamics physic courses but setting the heaters at 77, and temp is 81 with house at 68, even wit the math right I’m scratching my head. For the love of bubble gum where is the heat coming from? I have the same leds and never been an issue (tried on and off to test). Now that it gets colder then an ice cube at night. I have left the heaters off house drops to 60 (thank god for heated blankets), and the tank is still at 79? I knew there is a reason I choose not to major in thermal dynamics.

Is the house getting direct sunlight with warm temperatures during the day?
Is tank getting sunlight during the day?

Some pumps are responsible for heat in the aquarium...something to check out maybe.

Hello,

No my house stays at 68 because the ac is still set to on, and also the reason I woke up a blue smurf. To block alage etc there is literally no natural light by my tank at all. The only light it does receive is from the actual tank lights or when I turn on the kitchen lights but they are not even close to the tank.

Hello;

I actually thought this also but I’m running all the same wave makers and pumps since I started. As a point of fact I finally had my first two wave maker failures since I started (wait no this would be the second set of 2, which also happens to be the ones they replaced hmmmm), anyway so there is less but still it’s odd.

Dirty return pump causing excess heat?? Very unusual situation...

I'd suggest looking to see if you have changed how air flow moves in the room with your tank and your house in general.

Is the room the tank is in at 68 or could it be getting warmer?
Do you have less air flow across the top of the tank or sump causing less evaporative cooling?
Have you noticed less make up water being needed?
Is the humidity in your tank room higher than you think it has been?

What brand return pump(s) are you using? When was the last time they were cleaned? Are any of the pumps unusually warm to the touch? Skimmer pump? How are you checking the tank temperature? Have you checked the tank temp with another thermometer that you trust? Sometimes those heather controllers aren't as accurate as they could be. Just throwing stuff out there.

Hello! Perhaps the new heaters need recalibrating? Are you using a separate thermometer for the tank temp reading? Maybe that thermometer is off for some reason. I’ve read heaters thermostats can be off by a degree or more, not uncommon. Or as others mentions some equipment like pumps can put off excess heat.

Hello

Omg hi Brew :) glad to see ya. How have you been doing and how is your tank? So yo your questions nothing has changed the whole house is 68, no changes since I moved and even prior to the move everything is the same except the house lol. Never had an issue till about a week ago.
I did buy two new ones that are digital. Which inhave held off on installing just at the moment. I have left my large 500 watt heater unplugged. The secondary heater which is 300 watts is keeping the temp at 77. I think my large heater is the rogue. I’m still using the current USA dc return pumps and have no issues and they are always cleaned like the others. If I turn heaters off, temp drops pretty fast. Definitely going to install the new ones as I’m pretty sure my lone 300 can not fully heat this tank. I always ran two so the primary didn’t have to work so hard, guess that idea was pointless.

I’m still running my large uv but I’ve had that since the time before I moved. It sits on the back side of the tank but if heaters are unplugged temp drops fairly quickly, as it should. When I take the temps it’s from three sources,
1. The normal tank thermometer in all fish tanks lol
2.) my current USA digital thermometer which has proven to be accurate.
3.) my Kitchen aide digital (so much for use it with food now), which all three are literally exactly the same.
Both heaters are at 78, which is odd since the secondary 300 is set at 78 and tank stays at 77 with it alone. Large 500 is also at 78, but will kick it up to 84 at times.

it was hot in the house I mean who knew November would hit 80 so I had the ac off. Now it snowed so it went from 70w to snow and 30s in a week, stupid idaho. But now with the heat in the house set to 68, the small heater can barely keep the tank at 78 now. If I use the large one now it stays at 78. Lol and this is why I bought new ones.

I didn’t know you had to calibrate heaters. The new digital ones says nothing about that nor does my ehiems which I’m surprised actually failed, they are known to be the best.

Hey Sarah,

I'm doing ok. I still have my good and bad days. This would have been a very difficult year even if not for Covid. But... I'm making it. Thank you for asking.

My tank is slowly crashing. I took my son to Disney because I needed to spend some time with him and my CaRx went nuts and spiked my alk. By the time I could try and stabilize things, the damage was done. Not sure when the coral will stop dying, but hopefully it will be soon.

My tank has a heck of a time keeping temperature down in the spring and fall. My AC and heat run during the summer and winter keeping the air circulating in my office. In more moderate weather the air just stagnates in the room with my aquarium, causing the temperature and humidity in the room to rise. So higher temperature, lower evaporation, and my tank temp climbs.

I prefer my aquarium heaters not to have built in thermostats so I don't have to worry about calibration. I'm very happy to let my controller turn them on and off.
