When buying submersible equipment and in general, feel the power cord, if it feels dry don't buy it, its an indication of possible voltage leak to the aquarium and old equipment.
 
Also, check for manufacturing dates, and have them run it in a bucket for you. You may go so far as to test it for stray voltage, but that will create an awkward moment, lol
 
Great topic! So many people buy used to save some cash. If the item is in pieces make sure you have all the pieces and that they fit together before you buy.
 
anything acrylic look for crazing especially if it will be under pressure like a tank, fuge, ato container, skimmer. Might be ok but then again...might not.
