Used Protein Skimmer, Good idea or Bad?

There's a person in my area selling a bunch of marine aquarium gear, including one of these https://www.reefsupplies.ca/online-...1000-HOB-skimmer-with-external-1000-pump.html

I looked around and the $300+ tag is pretty standard in Canada. Anyways, they're selling it for $50, and am wondering how well protein skimmers hold up over time? They tell me it's 5-7 years old, but was only used for 6 months.

One of those pieces of equipment I keep getting told I need for my predator FowLR tank, but no way am I willing or able at the moment to pay full price.

IF it fits the constraints of your set up the most you can be in for is a new pump so it will be a good buy.

Some white vinegar and elbow grease and you could make the unit pretty close to new. pumps however do wear out but, for 50 dollars you can't go wrong.

If the body is in good condition (no cracks, etc) its a great buy. As mentioned above, pumps often need replaced, but that's a very small cost compared to the entire skimmer.

I got a trashed CPR backpak skimmer for free, spent $30 on a pump and a year later its a great skimmer for me.

To specifically answer this: Pumps last a few years and need replaced now and then. Rubber seals and gaskets can wear out, but usually last well (and are very cheap to replace). The body can last just about forever, as long as it doesn't take any physical damage.
