Hey guys I may be looking at a used tank instead of new, what should I look for when I go see it? Potential problems or concerns, it is currently set up so shouldn't have leak issues but what else should I inspect?

I would look for scratches, any repairs, and any bulk heads that may be drilled where you don't want them.

He says a couple minor scratches on the tank, and the only downside is the overflows are in the 2 corners instead of the middle back. It's a wet/dry system so I assume I can put a sump underneath instead right?

I wouldn't see why a sump couldn't underneath. I have never had a predrilled tank, so I wouldn't be best there. While they may not be in your optimum spot, you could always cap and drill new holes if I isn't tempered.

Well I would use the same holes I assume, I am sure a sump could go underneath since it is drilled and being run with a wet/dry system, however I know very little about this aspect of reefing.

I can buy this one for $1,500 instead of $2,400 for a new one with only 5 gallons less space. The only downside is the 2 overflows on the ends instead of the center overflow that I could block with rock and coral so it isn't an eyesore. However $900 less is a nice advantage and it com with some dry rock and lights already with it, which I may replace but I could always sell them to put towards new lights.

Just weighing the pro's an con's

Jay, how crafty are you?

reason I ask is NeveSSL and I picked up his 180 a few months ago. it had the two traditional large overflows on the backs of the tank. holes exiting at the bottom. he has since removed those, plugged the holes and then drilled and installed one of the new Ghost overflows. If the one you are looking at is drilled on the bottom, then you might could do the same or go for the C2C bean animal style.

I wish i could do mine like this but in its running state, this is impossible.

I have no idea how to do that, if someone knows how and can help I'm down but I couldn't plug holes or drill anything personally.

Do you have any pics of the tank you are looking at? It might help some of the guys make some suggestions for you. If all else fails and you don't want to drill it you could use a hang on back overflow. I am doing that now in my 125. Its not perfect but works for me. Why do you want the overflow in the center anyway? Does it work out that way for the layout of the room or the plumbing or what? Plumbing is the easy part and you could make those work for about anything.

I would rather have it in the center because the majority of it will be blocked from view by rock and coral. The sides you can't squeeze much rock in there to cover it on a bowfront cause it's narrower.

I decided not to buy I after seeing it, it had green algae in the sand bed against the glass, and algae on the overflows, and some silicone on the outside of one of the seams. On top of that there were scratches in he glass on the inside that were very noticeable because of algae in the scratches. All that said he had 300 lbs of live rock and it is a nice big tank, oceanic brand which were built well. For the money it would save me probably 1000-1200 bucks vs new once I add rock and lights to a new one, but I am just a little nervous of those things.

I hope I don't sound too picky, I just don't want to buy a potential headache and have to transport it 60 miles.

The algae would have came off and the scratch you might not seen with water in the tank just my 2cents.

Or rip the overflows out, place a piece of appropriately-thick glass over the holes, and grab a lower-profile overflow from Glass-Holes or a Reef Savvy Ghost if they ever make them again.
