As the title says, i used the calibrated trident to check my fresh batch of Instant Ocean reef crystals. Was mixed to 35 ppt and checked with calibrated refeactometer.

200 gal box. Mixed in brutte trash can with flow for 2 days.

Was a little dissapointed in results.

How long has the Trident been up and running?
 
I do not have the unit but... An interesting point starting at 10:30...

this is about where my tank (I use Reef Crytals for my water) tests using red sea kits, so it doesn't surprise me.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the CO2 in the ambient air can lower pH and thus use up alkalinity as the mix reaches equilibrium.
 
Sorry but I am trying to figure out why.

Its reef crystals, those results seem about right.

I see you have a trident though, (maybe thats the response you're looking for)
 
Did you get a chance to reference the data with a different test kit? I’m interested in the trident but I’m not paying 1 penny over retail lol

Slightly disappointed in the reef crystal levels. Trident is awesome. The levels came out lower than what I've read others post online they should be and what I thought they supposed to be. Im confident the trident is right. The levels it tested actually make sense because if I did very many water changes the levels in my tank would drop. Not a big deal but I have been dosing to keep my tank at levels I thought the reef cyrstals were supposed to test out at.

And i should have stated clearly in original post that I'm unhappy with the Reef Crystals levels being lower than what I have read they should be posted online. Not sure how to edit original post now?
 
Which level are you disappointed in? RC advertises 450 ppm Ca, 1345 ppm Mg at 35 ppt.

I was going by what was listed in this pic and a couple others post online. Not really a huge deal now that I know what RC parameters really mix up at. Mainly dissapointed in the calcium and mg level. Im actually glad alk is not as high as listed in pic.

in this thread @Randy Holmes-Farley explains some issues with precipitation with high alkalinity salt mixes. May be worth a read.

A quick search of forums and it appears that it's not unusual to get lower numbers than advertised. A few threads suggested switching to IO regular and using the savings to dose to your target numbers.

for me, I have a mixed 29g nano and my corals are quite happy at 10 dkh with RC. My NO3 and PO4 are about 2ppm and 0.06ppm respectively so I am comfortable with a mid range alk level. If my NO3 and PO4 were lower, I'd probably want to lower my Alk and vice versa.
