so after many years in the hobby this is the first time I have seen these. found them while looking for a couple items to upgrade my RO/DI system.

so can i use this on my ATO? if so, why does neptune give you a simple connector with a hole drilled in it and not one of these?

Does it have to be vertical?

Depending on the setup of your ATO you do not need a check valve at all. Just make sure the outlet side of the hose from the ATO reservoir is higher than the top waterline of the reservoir.

The one apex supplies is an anti flowback valve - reason for the hole. The one you listed from BRS is just a straight connector

The one the OP posted is a check valve not a straight connector. If you take a close look and notice the arrow moulded into the side of the fitting this indicates the direction of flow. The hole in the apex fitting is a siphon break but is just one way to prevent the back flow. A straight connector looks like this...

I agree with @Reeferdood, skip any valve and plumb it so it doesn't siphon into your sump or tank.
