hey guys,

i wonder about carbon use, is it necessary?
do i need to use it always?
any advises for using it?

i have a reef tank

thanks alot

You'll get mixed reviews. I personally don't run carbon or any kind of reactors. Just a refugium and a skimmer. Carbon is suppose to take out bad chemicals and smells and coloration in your water, but some people may comment that it removes beneficial stuff as well. Both users and non users have had great success. I'd say if you have a successful tank running, and don't run carbon, theres no need to start :)

The primary thought is that you somehow will want to export organics or the water will yellow over time, among other things. GAC is one way, skimmers and other media (e.g., Purigen) are others.

thanks for the answer

generally everything is fine, but i read about carbon absorbing bad stuff from the water and also making it clearer so i wondered.
i also read that it might absorb minerals that are good for coral.

This^

I’ll add that I keep carbon on hand and will throw some in a media bag in my media rack in some circumstances. When I frag zoas in my tank or if I find a dead snail it gives me peace of mind that the carbon is hypothetically pulling out toxins.
