I have been deciding for days now how to start my new tank cycle. Live rock vs Base, cured in tank or out. Heck Ive even entertained the tossing in a shrimp school of thought. I watched a ton of youtube vids but I never once saw anyone using pure ammonia to cycle a tank. This is a practice commonly used on the freshwater side of the fence. Does it not apply here or has it just fallen out of favor?

Actually a lot of marine hobbyist use the method instead of using fish aka fishless cycle.

See Dr.Tims article below.

I have always favored cured live rock, but I have continued to pay the price, seems like an Aiptasia always shows up.

I used Dr.Tim's once, the cycle went off without a hitch.

I used Dr. Tims and ammonia that I bought at wal-mart. My tank is now established and honestly, I had corals in my system within 3 weeks after cycling her up because all of the parameters were on point.

Switched to pure ammonia after having the shrimp in the tank for 4 days, the smell from the tank was unbearable. I dosed 1/4 and half teaspoon of ammonia to bring the ppm up to 2.0 and 2 days later it dropped to 0, I again raised the ppm to 2 and tested the next day and it dropped to 0 within a 24 hours, a few days later nitrites and nitrates were at 0, tank was cycled after about 3 weeks.
