I have a 165 gallon bowfront. I made screen tops for it as I have some fairy wrasses and firefish.

I am getting ready to go on a week long vacation, and would like to use an auto-feeder for that short time, but I am unsure how to use one with the screen tops. (It is the standard BRS 1/4" mesh).

I feed a combination of frozen, and occassionaly flake. I plan to use flake only during the vacation.

How does everyone use an auto-feeder with screen tops?

Are you going to put the feeders on while gone and take them off when back?

If you're going to leave them on I'd probably just slot the screen/cover to make it work/fit. That said I'd love to hear what others have to say as I will be crossing this bridge eventually.

My plan was to only use it for vacations, although if I have to cut the screen, I may change that plan. I was thinking of adding some anthias eventually, so perhaps leaving the feeder on for multiple feedings daily might be a plan, too.

Probably not the prettiest solution, but if it's only temporary, lift one corner of the screen enough to install the feeder, and just block any resulting openings with either some window screen from the hardware store or even duct tape.

I use an auto feeder with screens. The food just drops on top of the screen and through the holes and into the tank!

I don't know how with the screen top, maybe make a top for when you are away with a hole in it. It doesn't have to be pretty as no one will be there. But a tip for auto feeders. Set it a couple days before you leave. This way you can monitor it and make sure it's working properly.

I have the basic PetCo and Current auto feeders on my tanks, all with screen tops. I use pellet food in them and have no issues. I don't think they'd work as well with flake.

I recommend going to pellet food. I use it with my screen top and the pellets go right in.
