"using distilled water" or "reverse osmosis water"

So what is the proper way to dispose of DI resin?
Best method is to recharge and use over and over so you don't have to dispose of very much resin. I would guess there are hobbyists out there who would appreciate a gift of used resin so they can recharge it and reuse. For disposal it depends on state law. It's recommended that you contact your trash company to find out what they require. Generally resins can collect heavy metals from the water source so the used resin should be tested for leaching and you should provide the msds to the local waste company to find out if they are even allowed to take it. It's not something you should just place in you garbage or bury in the yard.

Resins lose their cation and anion properties over time when you recharge them. It doesn't take very many until it is no longer viable and not worth the effort.

my local Walmart store has a water fill up dispenser with r/o water and uv sterilized. it is less than $.40 a gallon with your own containers. since using that my algae has disappeared.
I used to use WalMart water too until one day I decided to take a TDS meter with me, one store (a new one) was 0 TDS and the other was 150 less than a week after it had been "serviced".

Don't trust anyone else's water unless it's a fellow reefkeeper. JMO
