I am setting up a 120 gallon reef. What are your thoughts of using 2 Ecotech S2 for the return instead of one M2. The idea is for redundancy.

I don’t know about those pumps specifically, but I highly recommend rendunancy with return pumps. I’m old school but I still use danner mag drives for my return pumps.

Running two return pumps is definitely a better idea than one. Pumps will eventually fail, for some that is in months and for others it is in years. It will always fail when you are not staring at the tank. By having two everything will stay alive until you get home and can look at the tank.

If your goal is reliability, I wouldn’t go with these fancy DC pumps. They run a couple years at best.

I have a different experience. I have been running a Jebao DC pump for close to 3 years on my reef and it is still going strong. I have only cleaned it once, so definitely meaning to get back in there and clean it out again. I have never had an issue with it. I am planning on eventually replacing this with two DC pumps. The reason for DC is to control flow and make sure volume in sump as well as DT are exactly where I like them. I have a harder time controlling that with AC, but it is doable.

I am not sure I agree with this. I am at the 2 year mark with the Jebao DC pump running my 40B. The pump shows absolutely no signs that it has slowed or will be going out any time soon. I know we never know when a pump will fail, but to say it will last 2 years "at best" is an over generalization. Just like when everyone said my Jebao pump would be dead in less than a year, yet here I am 2 years in and it is going strong.

Great idea. Can't comment on the model or ac/dc, but it will give you redundancy and flexibility. If you're into reactors and such, one can also support a manifold. I like the way you think. Make your next project an emergency battery backup and you won't be a star on the "tank emergency" thread

I will be adding the Ecotech battery backup (two of them) to power the Ecotech power head too.
