Sometime during the last week or so, there was a thread discussing tank covers and what materials might be used to make one at home. I recommended egg crate as it is easily customized into a top. The OP asked for a picture, but now, I am unable to find the thread. So here is the picture... Hope the OP sees this.

Does this create a shadow in the tank?

Does this create a shadow in the tank?

I know from the picture, it may look that way. But that is because the hood on the tank was up so I could get a picture. With the hood in place, there isn't a shadow. I did, however, have to increase the intensity on my lighting by 15% to make up for loss when the egg crate is in place.
