wondering how many of you just use gel super glue vs buying "reef/frag glues"??

i have been using the purple reef stuff, i glue alot of frags to purpled up rubble so the purple color glue basically disappears, i like that about it

I have used reef gels and the the gorilla super glue. I have had good luck with both of them..

I use a glue that I get from the local hobby store that comes in a larger quantity.

I use loc tight super glue gel, but I can't seem to find a decent price on it. One tube is $3-4 for .14 oz( or something like that). I got reef glue for $12ish and it was a much better deal because of the amount both seem to work the same.

Rev,

You are probably using the stuff i posted. Bob Smith industries pure cyanocrylate. been using it for a couple months and love it and the price. Alot of hobby stores can put there own label on it, but the bottle looks the same.

How do you guys use it to mount frags to discs? I have some unmounted frags coming next week and could use some pointers. Thanks.

Peace,

Chip

I use the super glue gel you can get from the dollar tree. a 5 pack for $1, can't go wrong. But I have used the "reef" glues and I do like those too

What I usually do is put an ample amount on one of my fingers and then put another finger to it..... <--- truly almost always happens.

Try to not glue the flesh of the coral. I will put a bit on the plug, dry off the area of the frag I want to glue with a towell, then stick it on the glue. I will let it sit for 5-10 seconds outside of the tank then dip it into tank water. Test to see if it stuck and done. Then I get to pry my fingers apart. :)

I use loc-tite gel and/or IC-Gel which is normally cheaper and comes in a much larger tube - about$4 for .7oz and watch for sales.

Depending on the frag .... i either use the gel alone, letting it tighten up a couple minutes before putting back into the tank ..... or a combination of the gel and water weld epoxy putty. The "sandwich" of the cyanoacrylate gel, then putty, then gel again is a very effective way - something about the reaction between the two will hold just about anything anywhere. Sometimes it is helpful to make a thin roll of the putty so you can apply it where it is needed more accurately too .... and final step, as Loki mentioned ..... pry my fingers apart and work on the residue for the next 3 days!

Ya....as everyone indicates, cyanoacrylate is cyanoacrylate. There are some minor variations to the super glue formula, but I don't think they matter much in our context.

The biggest difference from the drug store stuff to the hobby store stuff is size of container - hobby grades seem to come in much larger containers. Given the nature of super glue, I'm not sure I like it in bigger containers...tip gets clogged and you've got another task or one more thing to re-buy.

If I were fragging all the time and in quantity, I may feel differently. As it stands, I like the zero-overhead of singe-use tubes of the gel form - any brand, cheaper is better. If gel is unavailable and I'm in a pinch, I have made regular (non gel) super glue work, but i do not recommend it. ;)

Finally, the Super Glue hot tip of the day, straight from Wikipedia:
To prevent an opened container of [super]glue from setting before use, it must be stored in an airtight jar or bottle with a package of silica gel. Another tactic is attaching a hypodermic needle on the opening of glue. After applying, residual glue soon clogs the needle, keeping moisture out. The clog is removed by heating the needle (e.g., by a lighter) before use.

Can't believe I never heard of the "hot needle" trick or the jar w/silica gel trick before!
