I have an extra Echotch Vectra M1 return pump laying around. I'd like to use it as a skimmer pump on my Reef Octopus SRO 3000xp. This would be for a 180g w/ 40 gallon sump. The goal is to convert my older skimmer so it's more automated with online control/viewing. Skimmer currently has a PSK 1000 pump. Rated for 880 gph.

I'm I able to turn down the m1 enough so its not overkill? After that it's just a matter of plumbing them together. Or am I missing something? I'm basically trying to avoid buying a Reef Octopus Elite 200 or 220 skimmer which are $$$$$.

Any input is appreciated.

Unless you can mod a needlewheel impeller to fit your Vectra M1, I really can’t see how you could replace the current Sicce PSK 1000 needlewheel pump with a non needlewheel pump and have the skimmer work properly. I know Reef Octopus makes the VarioS DC pumps in needlewheel versions. If sized correctly, I think that should work.
