Using Nopox for the first time

Yeah...I want one! Any recommendations for one I can buy? Otherwise I might diy it.

If the algae is feeding off of the detritus, I doubt an algae scrubber will be that effective. The nurtients in the water are what is left over. If the detritus is on the rock and in the sand, the algae will use it as food before any nutrients are released into the water for the algae scrubber to work.

Why are you so hesitant to clean your tank? I think this will only lead to bigger problems in the future.

I can tell you they do.
Witch one do you have Steve and what size tank do you have

My problem is I really love the fish. Been in the saltwater fish hobby for 25 years. Last 7 years got into reefing. I have 50 fish and feed these pigs like crazy. So much work to keep nutrients down. Before I moved to a 550 gallon system I simple did big water changes but with 550 gallons it’s hard to do 30 percent water changes

Keep an eye on your filter socks... I thought nothing was happening for a while then all of a sudden my socks started to get clogged in < 1 day. Eventually I dramatically reduced the dose and figured I’d take it very slowly.

I don't have filter socks. But I probably should. You could consider that a nutrient export method I guess. The trouble with them is that the bad stuff is still in the water until you take it out.

Yes but you should be changing them once a week
Plus without them then bad stuff is still in the water too. Especially since you don’t do water changes

How are you managing your nutrients? Water changes? In my experience, no clean up crew can fight this level of algae. What I really need is more/better nutrient export methods.

But out of curiosity, what is your algae grazer?

I beg to differ..my tank was covered with gha due to the fact that it was a new tank and one lawnmower blenny and a few hermit crabs cleared up about 90% in just the first week. I didn't Wana tweak anything I was doing because I new it was just new tank syndrome. Also, carbon dosing is all dependant on your form of nutrients export, so a skimmer is vital. You should notice more skimmate as you dose. Also it is best to dose small levels at first and be a little patient. Imo, I wouldn't personally use any type of carbon dosing because it only means you have another thing to measure and keep consistent with because we all know consistency is hands down the road to success. I would figure. Out what is causing the gha and adjust your husbandry. Almost 100% of the time it's either due to not doing weekly WC's, feeding more than 1-2x a day, or lights being on too low or too long . If you fix just one of these measures, your gha should become a non issue

I designed & build my own, but i'm in australia so I can't really help you out. In the US you have Turbo's aquatics, SantaMonica, Clearwater. I have carpentry, engineering skills & then just surfed the net to learn the basic specifics for what works. If you have handyman skill, the tools, you can make a super-dooper scrubber.

I build my own scrubbers, & have a 220 litre system, so tiny compared to your swimming pool full of fat fish :)

Thinking aloud; on a tank the size of yours with heaps of fish & feeding, 2 things I would do are, have at least one big skimmer to remove as much particulate matter/detritus as possible, & have very efficient mechanical filtration to do the same thing. Plus, have really strong flow in the display to keep the detritus suspended so the corals can get as much as they need, with the rest going to the sump(s) / filters.

In regards to a scrubber, they are a great weapon against inorganic nutrient build-up, which is a consequence if heavily feeding a large amount of fish. The typical way of determining the size of scrubber needed, or specifically the screen size needed, is to determine the amount of food being fed to the system on a daily basis – measured in cube equivalents. Then using that number in the calculation. On a system as large as yours a massive scrubber is not the answer, but perhaps multiple units.

Thanks can always try to add one then 2 to see. I feed a lot your right. I have a big skimmer 3 big filter socks
3 mp60 and a gyre in my main tank

Well I should say that I'm gonna give nopox a break after seeing what I'm seeing, which is my GSP is closed up. For some reason it doesn't like the nopox. Going 20/5/5 mils seems to have packed quite a wallop. After I stop dosing it for a while, until the GSP opens up again I suppose, I'll start dosing tiny amounts of it again. I like my gsp, don't really want to kill it!

Man even after a couple days without using nopox it still looks like a ghost town in that tank! It's like just rocks and fish in there. GSP closed up, I'm pretty worried about it. Does anybody have an idea as to the likeliness of it bouncing back? I think it's been closed for about 3 days now.
