Hello all,
I’ve been having a problem with lower than desirable ph levels (for my goal) and made a refugium as one part of the solution. My ph before the refug and skimmer line to the outside hung around 7.88 after the skimmer line it went to 7.96 and with the refugium 7.98. I realized I shouldn’t be using the refugium with the light on 24/7 on full blast so I went to change the lighting schedule and realized I can sync it to be on whenever the ph is known to drop, especially spikes that aren’t desirable. I then thought of ph as a photosynthetic rate chart (higher ph= More photosynthesis) and the refugium as a method to increase the amount of photosynthesis when needed. I set it to turn on at 2 am when the first spike down always happen, and stay on until 11am. I checked the ph chart the next morning and it INSTANTLY rid the chart of these rapid drops. The ph used to fall to 7.92 at night, last night it only fell to 7.96. I kept the refug light on until 11 because the dt lights turn on at 8 and as the ph starts to climb, there is also a drop at around 10 (my guess due to high fish activity and waste), this helped a lot with increasing the rate at which the ph goes back to its highest point and will in turn provide more high quality coral growth sooner in the day and for longer. This schedule has been implemented for two days as shown in the graph, the first day showed some improvement and the second showed astonishing.
