Using qt equipment in display?

Can you use equipment in your display that was taken from a quarantine system being treated with copper? I bought a heater for a qt that I plan on taking down when I'm done with qt. Now I'm wondering if I can use this heater in my display or would this heater now be strictly used for future qts? Thanks

It's never a good idea to cross utilize qt equipment in your display, especially with medications such as coppers used with them. Copper can still leach into the water column over time and you still want to avoid possible parasite transfer.

realistically, you can sanitize something simple like a heater in a bleach solution, or hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar, or many other things. And when I took down my last QT, I took all the stuff and rinsed it, including some porous media, put it in rodi for a day in a bucket I used to mix copper water change water, and tested the soak water - I got 0.00ppm on a hana checker twice. So if you're careful, it's certainly possible, but most people don't like the risk.

I had a feeling, that makes sense. Now I also have biomedia that I use for this qt, what would I do with this if I take down the qt. Is there any way of keeping it populated? I'm gonna guess, no.

Nope unless you want to keep your QT running otherwise toss it.

That sounds like a similar process to recharging some of those seachem products/media. I appreciate the insight, I'll probably not risk it

A heater isn’t going to absorb much if any copper. Sterilize with bleach, rinse thoroughly, and let dry thoroughly if you “MUST” use it for your DT. I’ve removed copper from many Qt’s equipment included and tested. 0 ppm on the Hanna Checker. Heaters are fairly inexpensive though!!!! I’d just buy another one!!! It’s always a good idea to have separate equipment, utensils from DT to Qt though. Lol.. You probably already know that though! Cross contamination can be evil. Haha.
