Using Thrusters as wave makers in aquariums

Id love to take apart an abyzz thruster to see what they are using. But that is an expensive experiment.

@DanyL i think you are likely right that the difference between ravi’s thrusters and mine are material batch to batch quality.
do you have Abyzz wave pump that you are using?
 
No no, I can't afford one of those! I had a panta rhei ECM63 a few years ago that I bought used and it was awesome but sold it with my old system.
I am planning to order thr thruster in shared link, can you review the specs when yiu get chance, looks promising to me!
 
I just reached out to them to ask about the materials in use. A sealed motor is interesting although I wonder what the maintenance protocol is. If it is all hard coated aluminum and 316L then it should be corrosion resistant. I'll let you know what I find out

@ravi197699 id avoid the diamondynamics units. Their response to my inquiry into a "thruster for prolonged use in the marine environment with little or no corrosion and reasonably quiet operation" was:

"Since we don't have the item in stock and your requirements need customization, it wouldn't be reasonable for personal use unless ordered in large quantities. We hope you understand."

Which is basically to say, none of our stock options will work for you, we can make you a custom unit if you want to order 100+ but unless that is the case, we are not a good fit.

Sounds like corrosion would be near non existent since everything metal is pretty much sealed in plastic except the magnet. If I read the specs right the magnet is non-corrosive as well.

This is that companies focus , I've been following this thread and waiting for results, but with the plan to use these thrusters if the long term usage seemed viable.
 

Different brand but this is what first interested me in these, the ability to reverse and put flow out. Seems like it's possible for 1 thruster to take the place of 2 conventional wavemakers.
 
I'm wondering about hours, longevity in salt, spread of flow...
When I spoke to the company representative he said they have something like 10k-30k continuous hrs worth of testing in saltwater.

I explained my interest, and concerns with corrosion. They said corrosion is near impossible due to the sealed design, and that their focus was on submersible drones/remote submersible.

Also stated they have run these down below 10,000ft without failure. .
From the videos they have it appears to have strong output, may require a rfg output nozzle to spread it out over a larger area depending on how high they are run.

Noise was one of my main concerns, as the video of it ran at high speed sounds pretty loud.

They claimed its not overly loud though at normal usage speeds. ( rov)

I have 4 thrusters in my 800 gallon tank and it has been over a year since they are installed in tank, I am currently using 2 t200 and 2 t500, 500 are way over kill in my opinion even for large system, I have them in my tank because I have invested in those so I want to use them, I have those controlled via arduino with random ramp up and down which also turns thrusters in reverse, I have cleared them only once to take algae off the body,

I believe they are 0-10v , most of the drone stuff is. I know there's an electronics part that they sell, that's required. My understanding is that part goes between the controller and the thruster, possibly a regulator? But I'm not advanced in electronics.

As far as the blades being bent out, I'd be afraid of throwing them off balance, and due to the thin design I think a better way to dissipate the flow would be to mount a small cone shape in front of it.

An explanation, if you ever seen a jet engine, there's a cone in front that dissipates airflow to the outer edge of the intake. This helps increase the pressure on the turbine blades.

Now if the cone was put on the output side and flipped so the point faces the flow, the water would Naturally be spread out in a ever widening cone.
