I’ve been using the gallon jugs from WalMart with the green lids, they say purified by reverse osmis. Says nothing about being deionized.. Have tested before and found no nitrates or phosphates, should I be doing other texts to ensure this waters good enough for aquarium use or should I be fine with continuing use of this water?

TDS is important. One other thing is you never know when they actually service them. Risky to trust them.

It is highly advisable to purchase your own RO/DI unit. That way you have control.

I use distilled pre-packaged water in my tank for top-offs (I don't do water changes). I would trust pre-packaged water over the water that they fill from those machines. JMO

The drinking water will have things that you don't want. They are also remineralized and it's not just Ca and Mg. Frankly, you won't have a clue what they used to remineralize it. Distilled water will have a 0 TDS and that's the one you want.

So it’s smarter to use prepackaged Distilled water instead?

Definitely. Remember, much of the things that makes water taste better to us (and MUCH HEALThIER) than distilled (for drinking), are not necessarily things you want to add to your tank.

Yes. Use prepackaged.

In my years here on the R2r , I’ve seen some use it with great success , others not.

It’s a national chain. I suspect the water comes from different sources.

If you are not haveing issues with the water you are using , no3 Po4 , odd alge , no corraline, it’s probaly fine.

I used Walmart Green cap in my nano without problem except I got tired of carrying the boxes
Mocha always helped me do water changes

I used the Walmart house distilled gallon jugs for years in my nanos with excellent results.. think the one I used had a purple cap? It’s been a while..

Thanks a bunch

why guess? So yes. Get a TDS meter or send a sample out to triton for a full report.

WWC stated in their BRS videos that they do not use RODI, just RO, their water tests 0 TDS after running through their RO unit.

Copper is the biggest concern in reef aquariums, RO will remove 98% of it.

If you do get an RODI, there are portable units that can hook up to a standard sink faucet requiring no plumbing and can be stored away.

my rodi :

I replaced the filters last year based on their usage recommendation and will need to send it in next year membrane replacement.

BRS had a similar unit but a pricier. They do sell a TDS in-line meter for $24 that can be used on either unit (simple quick release lines)

Quite honestly my RO/DI system is no larger than the 3 gallons of water in the box from Walmart. I just unscrew the faucet aerator and screw on the diverter valve when I want to use it.
