So I'm getting ready to ramp up 2 part dosing here pretty soon and I was curious...since mg drops so little over the course of a week (probably not even 10ppm), would it be possible to simply use water changes instead of the 3rd part of 2 part? If not, why?

It's not only probable it's likely. Most people who do water changes don't need to replace magnesium. I add some maybe every 4 months in addition to my weekly water changes.

Agree with previous post. My Mg stays pretty stable just with 5% weekly water changes, I only rarely have to dose to get it back up where I want (usually 1300-ish). It will depend on your salt mix, your water change schedule, and your target level for Mg.

Well that's good to know. I was having trouble locating MAG flakes and I didn't want to buy BRS because it's pretty much the same thing except they probably order it in bulk from Ali Baba then sell it in their own bags.
