Uv filter and algea question

Ive got a uv filter running 24/7 for disease control

My question is can i dial it down becuase i have little to none algea in my tank to built up little more algea growth and my nitrates creep up every week
Water change wont bring it down that much

Or should i start with a nopox method?

you'll need to check the flow rate for deceases and for algae.
its either or not and + and
so your either killing algae or your sterilizing deceases it al depends on the flow rate. normally given by the manufacturer.

Anyway the flow rate is based on diseases but still almost no alea growth
Nitrates are around 16 atm

Maybe more a little more algea is good to suck up the exces no3

I was thinking of a refugium but does it work with a uv filter on

From what I understand, you cannot control algae with just UV. What ever flow rate you have, there will be some types of spores that wont be affected. Essentially, it will kill some type of algae letting other kinds take over without competition.

I’m one to keep up with the latest but this is new. Perhaps running UV 24/7 not the best approach long term, regardless of purpose desired.

I’m not sure that video fits with the discussion. Regardless, I did watch it and now I’m wondering what the results of their tests are. It was filmed 4 months ago and they said it would take 60 days. I don’t see a follow up video though.

OP mentioned running UV 24/7. Video provides an alternative approach to not doing that and why.

Where in the video does it mention that? I skipped the question and answer time at the end. The main theme of the video is them setting up their testing of the marine biome.

I don't recall exactly. Point being that 24/7 UV might impede pelagic bacteria. Historically the belief is that only benthic bacteria is of concern yet that may no longer be the reality. UV on a 24/7 schedule might be more detrimental than beneficial. I'm of the school of thought that doesn't believe any sterile approach is beneficial.

Plus UV won't reduce benthic algae. Just phyto or single cell. I'm assuming the OP was referring to single cell but if not than that should also be considered as to effectiveness of any UV.

Never seen that one. I’ll check it out.

My point being that if we get benefit from pelagic bacteria discovered through the new concept in biome. At least new to me and I tend to stay on top of new ideas. Therefore anything that would reduce pelagic bacteria would be detrimental and UV would fit that concern.

Could be I just connected the dots. Could be UV was mentioned. Don’t know. All I know is the video I posted was about assisting in advancing the knowledge of what affects our tanks. Sometimes best understand the logic behind why something is vs just being told do this or that. At least for me I must understand why. Never been one just to do as others. Especially in something like maintaining life which has many variables.

I’ll check the video out. I’m sure I’ll learn something new or at a minimum perhaps start on another path to learn something else. Fun part about any hobby for me is learning and exploring new ideas.
