This might be an incredibly dumb question, but is there any relation between elevated nitrates and use of a UV filter? What I mean ask is, is there a process of algae propagation that becomes interrupted by running a UV filter, resulting in underutilized nitrates and decreased export by mechanical filtration?

Having returned to the hobby after some delay I am surprised at the extent of micromanagement that folks are utilizing....so I'm not sure that anyone really knows. It is surely much more expensive

I don’t think there is generally much impact on nitrate from using a UV since in most situations, organisms in the water that might be killed by uv aren’t the primary consumers of nitrate.

If one us dosing live phytoplankton in hope that it will take up nutrients, that might be a scenario where it matters.

Ok, thanks. Just playing over things in my head, and got to wondering. Thanks for the response.
