UV filter for "cleaner" water?

Twice a week better. After 3-4 days what is caught on sponge starts to break down and re-enter water column. Not to mention a dirty sponge will restrict flow through filter
Perhaps I should start filtration upgrades with an In-Tank Media Basket to replace the sponge?

Why is your ammonia high if you dont even have fish? genuinely curious.

To answer your question, a UV is good for killing bacteria, pests, and algae in the water column. It does help keep your water nice and clear. But it will not help you with your other issues. I would recommend filter floss in your compartments in the back, change weekly with your water changes. Sounds to my like your benificial bacteria is low if you are having high ammonia problem and dont even have fish. I would hold off on the UV and purchase some DR. Tims bacteria. Get that bacteria colony built up really good, and then start running the UV. Im sure someone with ALOT more knowledge could correct me if im wrong on this, but thats my understanding of it.

I don’t think, unless much has died (does this happen?!), I’m low on bacteria. I started with live sand and live rock, in lieu of dry rock and dr. Tim’s.
As far as ammonia goes, I don’t have any fish, but as stated earlier, I had a huge issue with clove polyps that involved most dying and fouling up the water. I’m still cleaning the sandbed to this day, and might get an assistant invert to help with the job.
Thanks!

Just wondering—I saw that the new media basket takes up the first and second chambers. My heater is in the first one, and last time I tried, doesn’t fit with the return pump in the third chamber.
Any thoughts???
Sorry, not familiar with those particulars

I looked at you’re build thread. That looks like Caribsea Life Rock. Which isn’t live rock. Also, what kind of sand, Caribsea?

that stuff has bacteria spores, but isn’t real live Rock or live sand. It might be helpful, but not a replacement for a proper cycle.

It’s not caribsea life rock. It’s live rock that I picked out of a tank with cycled water.

Yes, your beneficial bacteria can die off for sure. It can also be overwhelmed, and if that coral died and overloaded your tank i would say keep up with the water changes, but also add some dr tims and maybe get some seachem stability as well. I think that will get you back on track!

Referring to an UV as a ‘filter’ is, I think, misleading. It’s a clarifier/sterilizer .....doesn’t actually remove anything, just kills certain annoyances and prevents them from continuing to proliferate.
