Hi All
I am in the process of setting up a new reef tank. This is going to be My dream tank. But I have hit a big snag. Most of the general advice is that I need a return pump flow of between 5 and 10 times the tank volume as the tank volume is 540 ltr's so far no problem. I want to add a UV filter for sterilization, not water clarity. Without exception, any UV filter that is rated for a tank of 500 ish ltr's is typically 10 to 15 watts but that will need a flow of under 1000 ltr's her hour. I have been told that the UV filter is best put inline on the return pump. You are beginning to see my problem. The other alternative is to put the UV filter on a closed loop in the sump. Is this lightly to be effective?
Your thought and advice or other ideas. Thanks in advance.

You could put T connectors with a valve on the intake to the UV so you can regulate the flow. Use a clean 1 gallon container to test how long it takes to fill and use math to figure out how much to close the valve.

If your running apex you could run a flow meter and get fancy
