UV killing all beneficial bacteria?

Currently alk 7.5, Ca 420 and mag 1400. Phosphate 0.02 and nitrates 12-15. Pretty much sump with reactors for gFO( small amount), carbon and life Bio Fil (Aquaforest media for bacteria to grow on). Skimmer and UV. Dose Aquaforest 3 part and the vinegar. Here is an older pic, not good at taking pics

Okay, beautiful system you have.

Not much I can comment on, maybe raise you alkalinity a tad to 8-9. You have the nutrients to do so. You may try AA's and or adding some trace elements to supplement your salt mix values and see if it helps. Can hurt.
 
A UV sterilizer would kill bacteria in the water column.
One of the reason to dose carbon is to increase bacteria in the water column and be skimmed out by the skimmer.
I do not think the uv sterilizer is the reason your nitrates are high but it would make a little difference on bring them down.

Good point. I may shut if off for a while and see what happens.
 
Interesting problem. Here are some ideas.

1) Whenever there is an odd nitrate test result, you always have to consider whether the test rests are misleading, e.g., the test was done incorrectly, the sample was contaminated or there is nitrite (NO2-) present.

2) How fast is nitrate being produced? Does a large water change decrease the nitrate concentration and then it slowly increases? Does skipping a day of feeding decrease the nitrate level? Is there just more nitrogen being imported by food than exported?

3) 20 ppm nitrate for 125 gallons of water corresponds roughly to 160 g or about 6 ounces of biomass (wet). Are you missing a fish or two?

4) Bacteria absorption of nitrate can be inhibited by the presence of ammonia. Said another way, the bacteria you are feeding with carbon might be competing with the ammonia oxidizing bacteria in your tank for ammonia. The idea is that until the vinegar consuming bacteria become ammonia limited, nitrates will be untouched. Consider increasing the dose of vinegar or decrease the feeding for awhile. I have seen suggested upper limits for vinegar of 1 or 2 mL per gallon per day or when the water becomes cloudy or the presence of excessive bacterial growth on surfaces, and 0.5 mL per gallon per day as a maintenance dose. I have also seens reports of coral issues, presumably through some sort of interaction between carbon dosing and high alkalinity, but this interaction has not been validated. Similarly, there are claims but not validation that cyanobacteria outbreaks are caused by carbon dosing. Cyanobacteria outbreaks seem to occur randomly.

5) A one year old UV lamp performance has probably substantially degraded. Also, is the dwell time in the UV time correct? The UV unit just might not be a lethal device any longer.

Lot of points. I did just get back a water test from
ATI and confirms my readings for nitrate. Actually they show a level of 20 when I show 12-15. Not really sure about number 2 today. No missing fish, maybe a snail or two over months but should not impact. Number 4 is interesting. I have tested ammonia a couple times and comes out at 0. When I first went to Vinegar my highest dose was 60 mls to go from nitrate of 50 to 0, I went up to about 110 now but may consider going higher. Yes I am seeing cyno but it could be from the nitrate/phosphate gap also. I run the UV at 170 mls, slow end to ward off free floating ich/velvet. Yes, was getting ready to replace the bulb soon. I’m still just under a year. Thanks for the feedback as I never had issues keeping low nutrients and somewhat stumped.
 
Why turn the skimmer off? Sounds like that baby was doing the motherload of nutrient export.

Not turning off skimmer. May try turning off UV to see if something changes.

I do recommend to place UV unit on a timer and run it for 12 hrs during day and have it turn off the remaining 12 hrs ( EG: ON 6a - 6p and OFF 6p - 6a)

If we’re sure UV is not an issue, why do folks only run it 12 hours per day?? Not sure I see a point.

because, phytoplankton and other beneficial life emerge when the lights go out and naturally you don't want to shock/disturb this food source that is available during lights on period.
 
What UV are you all running for your various size reef and mixed reef tanks?

I have a 180 gallon..
The 160 watt is custom by my reef creations. It cost $3300 new. I run such a large UV because it keeps ich and velvet at bay, and they have never killed my fish even though I don’t quarantine. The cheapest 160 watt is made by aqua uv. It is $1200. My unit is different because the input wattage is 160. It puts out 300 watts of actual UVC
2x 150 watt bulbs

I would look at running about 50-80 watts output for your tank.

I have a 180 gallon..
its not but does the job. I only run it 12 hrs a day as tank is well established
 
Correction- just looked at my uv power pack- it’s a 40wt, not 25wt
