Had an out break of ick and something else that wasn't identified. Just killed the fish. I was told to get a UV unit to help with disease breakouts. Am I being snookered or is it good advice?

UV kills almost everything that passes. Even down to the good bacteria
I have been doing this for almost 20 years and never thought twice about using one.
if you are looking for sterile water than yes this will HELP do the job.
if you are looking g to rid of ich then its easier to let it run its life cycle while the fish are in QT

If all your fish were wiped out, then it sounds more like velvet than ich. A UV may help fish cope with ich by reducing the number of free swimmers in the water column seeking to infect them, but it won't help much with velvet. Velvet dinospores are too numerous in comparison to ich theronts.

My advice to you is to go fallow in your DT for 72 days and moving forward start QT'ing your fish.
